Dear Parents,
We are delighted to bring you news and event information from Tufts University.  In just a few short weeks, we hope to welcome you all to campus for Parents and Family Weekend, October 28-30.  We have a great schedule planned, filled with lectures from some of our most dynamic professors, an arts festival with performances from our student groups, as well as athletic events! Please check out the schedule and don't forget to register! While the weekend is free except for tickets for athletic events, we'd like to get an accurate count for planning purposes.  And be sure to come to the Mayer Campus Center upon arrival to receive your registration packet.

Students will have the opportunity to hear several notable speakers who are coming to campus this fall, including:

Niall Ferguson, Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History at Harvard University and William Ziegler Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, will speak on "The Financial Crisis and the Descent of the West," Thursday, October 13 at 4:30 p.m., and
President Bill Clinton will deliver the Issam M. Fares Lecture on Sunday, November 6 at 4:00 p.m.

Looking ahead, Commencement will be on Sunday, May 20, 2012.  Many families arrive on campus the Thursday before Commencement to attend Tufts Night at the Boston Pops, a fun-filled evening at Symphony Hall.  Information about the concert is mailed out in mid-March.  To get an idea of what the weekend is like, please see last year's calendar of events.

NETWORKING: HOW TO TEACH YOUR CHILD A LESSON

JOIN CAREER SERVICES FOR A FIRST-EVER PARENT-STUDENT NETWORKING EVENT DURING PARENTS AND FAMILY WEEKEND!

As parents, we recognize that our example and actions create the most powerful lessons for our children.  By the time your child is in college, you hope that you've instilled the values you hold dear and the behaviors you've encouraged.  Today, you have a new opportunity to teach another lesson; this one's about networking.

How has networking benefited you in your own career?  As you consider this, please plan to join Career Services for its first-ever parent-student networking event during Tufts Parents and Family Weekend.

First, hear how Career Services works with your children and then join us immediately after for an hour of networking with students.

Life after Tufts: Coaching a New Generation for the Workplace

Jean Papalia, Director of Career Services

Friday, October 28, 2:40-3:30, Alumnae Lounge, Aidekman Arts Center

Parents as Professionals: Informal Networking for Students

Friday, October 28, 3:30-4:30, Remis Sculpture Court, Aidekman Arts Center

Parents as Professionals is a unique opportunity for students to learn about networking in a casual, unintimidating setting.  Parents will gather in groups according to profession or industry. Students will approach you to discuss your work, your career path, and your advice.  No preparation required. Simply answer students' questions about your own career: jobs you've held, organizations where you've worked, and industries that you know well.

You may join one of the following groups: Advertising, PR, Marketing; Arts, Media, Entertainment; Business Management/Administration; Information Technology; Engineering;

Consulting; Finance; Healthcare; Law; Education/Government/Nonprofit; or Science/Research.  If you don't see a match on this list, you may create your own category.

The Career Services team endorses, promotes, and teaches networking as the most effective tool to identify internships and jobs.  We believe it's a fundamental life skill that students will use to build professional relationships, learn about employment opportunities, and advance in their careers.  Please join us in teaching your children this important lesson.
