Happy Tuesday!
Today, February 9th, is the last day for returning ballots on two important levies. The South Whidbey School District is asking for replacement levies to repair and maintain buildings and upgrade technology. The first three year levy covers technology upgrades and building repairs while the second levy covers operating and maintenance expenses. The South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District is asking for a renewal of a four year levy that pays for parks and programs.
Last week Chamber Member Mary Donaty from Paradise Found Fiber Farm participated in the Cascade Loop Culinary/Agritourism Workshop and her account of all that took place is below. Thank you, Mary, for sharing your experiences.
Port Commissioner Curt Gordon was the guest speaker at the Chamber breakfast meeting. According to Gordon, transportation is one of the keys to securing an increase in visitors and making the area more to accessible residents. He discussed the example of Friday Harbor where passengers waiting to load the ferry are put in holding lots and told in advance what time they will be boarding the ferry. This gives them the opportunity to get out of their cars and explore the area enjoying local shopping and restaurants. People board the same ferry they were planning on, they just don't sit in their cars waiting. Increased pedestrian traffic could have a big effect
on Clinton's economy.
The possibility of limited reservations on the ferry was also discussed and its impact on local businesses. Gordon encouraged those with an opinion to voice contact The Washington State Ferries or Rep. Mary Margaret Haugen.
The Visitors Kiosk is getting an early start on the season. Volunteers are always needed to meet and greet Island visitors. As Fred Lundahl mentioned in the meeting most visitors make a round trip on the ferry. Their stop at the Visitors Center is a great opportunity to let them know what they can visit on the return trip through Clinton. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Katy Shaner at 221-8879.
So it sounds like this is a week to get involved, make your voice heard, support all that is Clinton...and don't forget your special Valentine on Sunday, February 14th!

Report from the Cascade Loop Culinary/Agritourism Workshop
It was a great 2 day event. Day one brought 11 visitors to our farm throughout the course of the day and we did our normal farm tour for them, we provided handouts which they all took. The visitors were either business owners or program presenters and were from near and far. Clinton, Cashmere, Wenatchee, Freeland, Langley & Mt Vernon. The one on one time was nice and we were able to share a lot of great info.
Day two was a talented and welcoming group of presenters and eager business owners totaling 81 from all over the cascade loop. All of us with the same goal HOW can we interact better and help one another to get the word out that we exist. We were given the challenge after several drills of putting together a tourist trip. Three groups, all destination related and we had 1/2 hour. To say it was a challenge is an understatement to get as many representing Whidbey folks to be quiet and get an agreed upon direction/theme etc and all on paper....we did it.... cover the entire Island and it certainly brought us all together. Our efforts were presented to the group as well as the other groups efforts etc.
Our efforts are now in the hands of the Washington State Tourism group and they will actually put a proposal plan together to make it a actual tour plan......not sure on the mechanics of this but that is the plan.
I believe we all left the day with a positive energized feeling that we can all help one another and we actually will.
I personally came away with definite ideas of HOW TO do a few things better. The Whidbey group all agreed to keep this spirit going and will most likely meet again to plan more.
So in a nut shell that was my experience...I am hopeful and encouraged.
PS I should say the participants were chefs, growers, restaurant owners, and folks like myself who indirectly supply a link, we grow small amounts of produce, provide many farms with animal manure for their needs, and provide a place of destination for an educational farm experience of animal to finished product.
I hope this answers your questions..........if I missed any thing just ask.
Mary B. Donaty

| Langley celebrates its 26th Mystery Weekend with "Male Order Murder" - February 27th & 28th
Langley celebrates its 26th Mystery Weekend with "Male Order Murder" Feb. 27-28 Forget computer profiles and video dating, bachelors in the little town of Langley on Whidbey Island have decided that old fashioned love letters are the best way to find the right girl. That is until the leader of these eager pen pals is found outside the post office with a letter opener in his heart. Was it one of the blushing brides, a disappointed suitor, or a P.I.A. agent who did him in? The "Moose" and the "Squirrel" aren't talking but maybe you can help solve the latest February murder to hit this usually peaceful little town.
Each year, Langley experiences a murder most grand, Langley-style. The entire town takes part in the caper, from city officials to downtown merchants. The tiny seaside village can use all the help it can get to solve this latest and most mysterious of the ongoing series of February murders.
The Langley Visitor Information Center is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The Coroner delivers his report at 1 p.m. on Saturday at City Hall. On Sunday the Visitor Information Center is open 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. At 4:30 p.m. the murderer is revealed at the Langley Middle School, apprehended and locked up!
