Happy Tuesday!

Punxsutawney Phil

Punxsutawney Phil says 6 more weeks of winter...if it stays like this, I think we can handle it!?

Once again, we have a lot of news and opportunities coming up. Please check out the details in the many announcements below.

Additionally--
  • Are you interested in expanding bus service on the South end of the island? Chris Jerome, our newest Port Commissioner, has called a meeting for next week, on Feb 9th, with Island Transit and other local community organizations. Would you like to represent the Clinton Chamber? If so, please contact me so I can share the details.
  • We want your input on the idea of a sign on the pad at 525 and Campbell Rd. Folks in Langley are clear about what they would like on a sign...how about Clinton? What, if anything, would you like to see on the sign representing Clinton? Send your thoughts!
Reminder on other Clinton-related issues:
  • Beautify Clinton--Bob Craven, of Craven Insurance is interested in working with some other folks on a "beautify Clinton" effort. Do you want to join him? Call at 360-341-7200 or send an email
  • Future Search visioning process for Clinton has started with the formation of an initial 15 person steering committee. We'll keep you posted, and please let us know if you're interested in participating in some way.

Enjoy the week!

Welcome David Welton

pseIn addition to being a cardiologist working with University of Washington, David Welton has made a reputation for himself as one of the outstanding photographers in the area.  He does both freelance fine art and news photography.  Some of you may know him from his photos in the South Whidbey Record and from seeing him at local events including the Maxwelton 4th of July Parade and local fundraisers.

Why are we talking about him?  We approached David about using some of his pictures on the Chamber web site to  showcase the rich diversity that is Clinton... and things have taken off from there.  His interest in documenting the many aspects of Clinton life--including history, businesses, community gatherings, social events and the natural beauty of the area-- meshes perfectly with the Chamber's goal of encouraging people to Discover Clinton.

David's work has been accepted into numerous art shows and galleries, including The Edmonds Art Festival, The Santa Barbara Arts Festival, and The Brooks Adobe Center for the Arts, and shows at the University of Washington Medical Center, the University of Oregon Art Museum, the prestigious Brooks Institute of Photography  and the Santa Barbara Arts Council Gallery.  David's photos are also part of numerous private collections, including those at California's Midland School. His photos have also appeared on the cover of the book Confronting the Big C, in the Santa Barbara News Press, and more recently the South Whidbey Record, On Whidbey!, the Everett Herald and publications of the Island County Chamber of Commerce.

We hope you take pleasure in these photos.  If you have ideas about life in the Clinton Community that would be good subjects for David's artist perspective, please let us know.  We are thrilled by the possibilities of what David's photographic eye may focus on--highlighting the energy, the creativity and the beauty that make up Clinton. Thank you, David, for your very generous gift to our community!

Editor's Note - As someone who has has the experience of First Monday, I cannot recommend it highly enough.  It's no sandy beach with bright sunshine, it's better.  It is truly a vacation from everyday life.  It is a time to get very quiet and to focus on thinking very clearly and peacefully.  The Whidbey Institute staff and grounds offer a sacred and centering environment to let your mind and spirit wander in peace - even if that means just an afternoon snooze in a quiet cottage. If you can't make it this month, do yourself a favor, make a reservation now for whatever first Monday you are available. Good Cheer's Annual Meeting at Clinton Community Hall - Wednesday, February 3rd

Volunteers, donors, and staff are invited to attend Good Cheer's Annual Meeting on Wednesday, February 3rd at 5:30 p.m. at Clinton Community Hall. This once-a-year meeting provides an informative look at South Whidbey's oldest charitable community organization--a look back at the past year as well as a look forward. It provides a snapshot of hunger needs in our community, how Good Cheer worked to meet those needs, plus goals for 2010.

The nomination committee has recommended for the five Board positions the reelection of Bill Watts, Gene White and Jay Ryan, and the election of Pam Bickel and Laura Price.

In addition to business, this night is an opportunity to talk in person with Board members while enjoying hors d'oeuvres and beverages provided by the Board as a thank you for another successful year of meeting community needs -- another record-breaking year I might add. Please join us for Good Cheer's annual meeting on Wednesday, February 3. Cascade Loop Culinary/Agritourism Marketing Program  - Wednesday, February 3rd & Thursday, February 4th

Washington State has selected our region as one of five to springboard a
new Culinary/Agritourism Marketing Program. A team from Washington State
Tourism and Washington State Department of Agriculture will be coming to
Whidbey Island on February 3 - 4, 2010 to collaborate with you to create,
and ultimately promote, our region's food and travel products.

Day One will be a rolling workshop -- optional visits to farms, fisheries,
food producers, wineries and/or restaurants in your area. These are
businesses that are ready now to partner in local and regional travel
packaging.

Day Two will be led by Judy Walden, a nationally known rural tourism
consultant, who will take us through a fast paced,
roll-up-your-sleeves-and-get-it-done workshop that will result in at least
two marketable travel itineraries for your region.

Register today for this timely opportunity to promote your business and
become part of the larger push to brand the farm/food connection in
Washington.

Langley celebrates its 26th Mystery Weekend with "Male Order Murder" - February 27th & 28th

Langley celebrates its 26th Mystery Weekend with "Male Order Murder" Feb. 27-28
Forget computer profiles and video dating, bachelors in the little town of Langley on Whidbey Island have decided that old fashioned love letters are the best way to find the right girl. That is until the leader of these eager pen pals is found outside the post office with a letter opener in his heart. Was it one of the blushing brides, a disappointed suitor, or a P.I.A. agent who did him in? The "Moose" and the "Squirrel" aren't talking but maybe you can help solve the latest February murder to hit this usually peaceful little town.
Each year, Langley experiences a murder most grand, Langley-style. The entire town takes part in the caper, from city officials to downtown merchants.
The tiny seaside village can use all the help it can get to solve this latest and most mysterious of the ongoing series of February murders.
The Langley Visitor Information Center is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The Coroner delivers his report at 1 p.m. on Saturday at City Hall. On Sunday the Visitor Information Center is open 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. At 4:30 p.m. the murderer is revealed at the Langley Middle School, apprehended and locked up!

Reclamation of Self - March 4 - 7, 2010

The Reclamation of Self with Sheila Belanger, M.A.

Midlife is a journey of reclamation. As a child and young adult, a woman creates identities that enable her to survive and to fit into family and culture. The midlife passage (between the late 30's and early 60's) calls her to release versions of self that she has outgrown and to reclaim her authentic self. Come gather with other women to explore, honor and celebrate this tumultuous and potent life phase. This experiential retreat includes the wisdom of astrological midlife cycles; solo time in nature; creative processes; ceremonial circle; shamanic journeys; Soulcraft practices; a purification sauna; a Labyrinth meditation and drumming and dancing. No previous background in astrology or shamanic journeys required.
Sheila Belanger, M.A. is an inspiring astrologer, shamanic mentor and wilderness guide. She holds a Master's Degree in Transpersonal Psychology and has 25 years experience as a counseling astrologer. Sheila carries an archetypal and shamanic perspective on astrology and specializes in the midlife journey. Her presentations are guided by humor, heart, and deep reverence for our shared interconnectedness.

5:00 PM Thursday-4:00 PM Sunday, March 4-7, 2010
Fee: $495 (Some partial scholarship and work exchange positions are available).
