Happy Monday:
We had a wonderful, first ever, breakfast meeting last week. Not only were we greeted with a vibrant sunrise and a tasty (and filling) meal care of Jeff Hadlock at Speedboat PIzza, Don Rowan educated us about Roth IRA's and other savings vehicles that will enable us (if we use them) to actually retire one day. In addition, we had some energetic participation in a few of Clinton-related issues:
--Bob Craven, of Craven Insurance is interested in working with some other folks on a "beautify Clinton" effort. Do you want to join him on possible projects like holiday decorations and flower baskets for downtown, banners on light standards, landscaping, murals on buildings? Contact Bob at 360-341-7200 or bcraven@craveninsurance.com
--Kim Tiller, of Whidbey Island Soap, and Jason Kalk, of Lincoln Computers, have interest in helping decide and implement what goes on the concrete pad at 525 and Campbell Rd. How about you, would you like to provide some input as well? Contact me at sherryl@bestpracticeinc.com or 425-501-5025.
--The visioning process for Clinton, called Future Search, has started with the initial formation of an initial 15 person steering committee. I will post the list of the initial steering team members on the website and I invite you to contact any of us with questions, ideas, and concerns. This is intended to be a very open and inclusive process, so your input is requested and appreciated. Dave Tiller, of Whidbey Island Soap, has already expressed interest in participating in this process.
--Wayne Morrison expressed concern about fees for Island County permits (of all types) and encouraged us to learn more and communicate about the increases.
Please note the many events happening this week, see below for details. The new year has certainly begun with lots of promise and ideas!
Have a great week...let's continue to look for ways to work together for the benefit of all...
Warmly, Sherryl |

| Experience Langley January 12, 2010 9 to 11 a.m. at The Clyde
The Langley Mayor's Council on Economic Health and Langley Chamber are co-sponsoring the first of many exciting workshops not to be missed - EXPERIENCE LANGLEY! Join us Tuesday, Jan. 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. at The Clyde Theatre when Russell Sparkman, Langley councilman and business owner, will kick off this quarterly workshop series with a presentation about core concepts of the Experience Economy, and the implications for Langley's economic development. Russell will bridge the connection between Experience Economy concepts and how the Arts, Culture and Education focus of the Comprehensive Plan can be leveraged to encourage visitors from near and far. Russell will also explain how these efforts make Langley, in particular, and South Whidbey as a whole, an attractive choice of residence for families in which a major income earner's ability to work isn't tied to living in a major metropolitan or suburban center. Finally, Russell will touch upon the meaning of the "Groundswell," an umbrella term used to describe the forces behind Social Media and Social Networking, and the implications, both good and bad, for promoting and marketing our community and our businesses. Sherry Mays, Chamber director, will follow with a moderated panel consisting of some of our business owners who have been making a difference for many years, as well as those who are new to our community: - Marie Lincoln of Chocolate Flower Farm and Garden Shed - Priscilla Lowry of Lowry-James Rare Prints & Books and Langley's Booktown - Tamar Felton of Star Store, Star Store Basics and Star Store Bayview - Bill Cass of Nymbol's Secret Garden We'll leave plenty of time for questions and answers from you and your managers, who we thoroughly encourage to participate. Our Langley experience begins the moment we greet a person on the street and each time we connect with a visitor, whether they be from Clinton or Calgary. Each time we interact with someone we encourage a sale, a return visit and more importantly a believer in Langley. We believe in Langley and we believe in you. Come listen, learn and share your experiences and ideas. See you there! | Matching Gift Challenge at Whidbey Institute
We're writing to let everyone know about an exciting matching gift challenge from two Institute supporters. They are calling upon all of you who walk our trails, use our facilities, come to events, stay for retreats, or who moved to the Island because of the Whidbey Institute to step up to support the Institute at a new level.
The Challenge: They will match 100% of any gift amount you give to Whidbey Institute between Dec. 15, 2009 and Jan. 31, 2010 -up to a total of $10,000! All first-time gifts will be matched in full. Dollar for dollar, you will double your own gift! They are doing this because:
|
"We believe in the Whidbey Institute as a place of healing, inspiration, and renewal for the Greater Seattle community and also as a beacon of light for communities throughout the world who are searching for models of sustainable living. We feel that the Whidbey Institute is poised on the threshold of a whole new incarnation of its almost 40 year commitment to nature, spirit, and the human future. It is opening to an amazing new vision: to be a center of excellence for gathering and disseminating the wisdom and best practices of the most exciting leaders in the environmental and social transformation movement."
|
Your participation will make sure this happens; AND allow us to protect this beautiful land for our children and grandchildren. If we don't do it, who will hold this space for the next generation?
So if you value the work of the Whidbey Institute-work dedicated to personal renewal, kinship with the Earth, the cultivation of new, more adequate patterns of cultural and environmental sustainability, and leadership formation to meet the challenges of our times, this is your time to step up too.
With all of us helping, we can actualize the potential of the Whidbey Institute at Chinook! Please be as generous as you can.
