CENTER ROLL CALL
Erie Family Health Center now offers pharmaceutical services to patients

If you haven't stopped by Erie Humboldt Park Health Center in a while, you may be quite surprised by what you see. The recent Erie Humboldt Park renovations have created a beautiful space for providers, front desk and clinical support staff and most importantly, for our patients. Besides renovations to the aesthetics, the building's infrastructure has been updated (including electric, mechanical and plumbing), an area was created to accommodate Erie's new Family Residency Program and clinical space was revamped to increase collaboration between medical providers and clinical support staff, as well as to ensure better patient flow.
There is also an exciting addition to Erie Humboldt Park that you'll notice right away. A new patient pharmacy on the second floor is now open for business. This new service allows Erie to provide even greater patient access to quality medical care. Patients not only have an efficient way to meet their pharmaceutical needs, but also have a 'one stop shop' at their convenience - a place where all their health needs can be met under one roof.
Erie's Pharmaceutical Manager, Hiren Zala, Pharm.D. has been working side by side with Erie's administration staff during the remodeling period at Erie Humboldt Park. His experiences with Erie has been nothing but exceptional. "Everyone across the entire organization has been cooperative and excited to have an onsite pharmacy," says Hiren. "Collaborative support from administrative, development, IT and clinical departments further prove Erie's commitment to deliver full service quality health care."

NEW @ ERIE Erie celebrates the first days of summer with the new Henson Garden Initiative Program
The season of summer has finally arrived here in Chicago - and Erie Family Health Center does not plan on wasting a single moment of this balmy, beautiful weather. Recently, a few Erie employees volunteered their time to help break ground on the new Henson Garden Initiative Program, a part of Erie's Health and Wellness Program at Erie Henson School Based Health Center. This program aims to promote healthy lifestyles to children living within the North Lawndale community through education on healthy eating and the importance of physical activity.
The Henson Garden Initiative is just one facet of the Henson Health and Wellness Program. The Henson Garden Initiative, which is an after school program for the students of Henson, will help children increase their knowledge of nutrition through planting and managing a garden. Since the children will be helping to assemble the garden and grow the produce, the garden will not only serve as an opportunity for education but also as an opportunity for physical activity. Children will also be able to share the information they've learned about healthy living to their peers through classroom presentations. Children will be sent home with produce from the garden as well as recipes to prepare with their parents at home. Any additional produce will be donated to the emergency food pantry at Henson, which help teach the students an important lesson on giving back to their community.
There are many benefits to introducting children, especially children living in urban areas, to information about healthy eating. "Exposing children to where their food comes from, how it grows and why it's important to eat healthy foods allows them to be informed and empowered about making healthy choices," says Elizabeth Mendoza, an Erie AmeriCorps Health Educator. "When this information is presented at a young age, the children are then able to get a healthier start in life."

ERIE HEALTH TIPS How to have fun - and be safe - near the water this summer
The frigid days of winter are long gone. Blooming flowers line the streets of Ashland Avenue; the weather forecast consistently predicts 85 degree sunny days...it's almost hard to remember when three feet of snow was piled outside our doorsteps only a few months prior. Summer is definitely here in Chicago. If you're like the rest of the city, you can't wait to get outside and participate in all the summertime activities Chicago has to offer.
A favorite way for kids and adults alike to soak up the sun is by taking a dip in their local neighborhood or community pool. While this may be one of our favorite summer activities - it can also be one of the more dangerous ones as well. In 2007, according to the Center for Disease Control there were over 3,000 fatal unintentional drownings (non-boat related) in the United States.
Swimming is a great way to spend time outdoors and with friends and family during the summer. It's important to remember, though, that swimming can be risky if proper safety precautions aren't followed. Read below to learn some ways to keep you family (and yourself) safe at the pool.
