NEW @ ERIE

Erie Family Health Center partners with Northwestern University to bring a brand new health care program to Erie patients

Erie Family Health Center promises many things to the Chicago communities it serves - quality and compassionate health care, a warm and comforting environment, and the promotion of wellness and preventative care. To continually fulfill those promises, Erie understands innovation, creativity, and above all, the ability to search continually for opportunities will lead to better serve our patients every day.

Erie Family Health Center's new partnership with Northwestern's Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer 's Disease Center is a perfect example of Erie's commitment to developing new ways to help all patients achieve optimum health - both physically and mentally. This new Erie venture is supported by a Community Partnership grant from Northwestern Memorial Hospital - La Memoria Project. The new program will provide patients with cognitive impairments with screenings, psychosocial assessments, health education, and a link to critical support services. Kristen Oshyn, a Master's-trained social work intern will counsel patients living with dementia and their caregivers to provide them with the support and resources at Erie Family Health Center.

Dementia is an emerging public health crisis in Hispanic communities in the United States. Dementia cases among the Hispanic population are expected to increase six-fold during the first half of this century. In other words, 1.3 million Hispanics are projected to have the disease in 2050, compared to less than 200,000 currently living with the disease today. "Elderly Latinos with memory loss and dementia and their families face many barriers in the care and treatment of dementia," says Kristen.  "This grant was intended to improve the recognition of the barriers currently present for Erie families to access cognitive screening resources."

WHO'S WHO @ ERIE

Erie Family Health Center welcomes their new Vice President of Finance, Kevin Greenberg, MBA

There is a new face around Erie West Town. Kevin Greenberg, MBA, joins Erie Family Health Center from the Jewish United Fund where he held the position as Controller. He joined Erie on May 2nd 2011 and he will serve as the Senior Financial Executive on Erie's management leadership team.

A native of New York City, Kevin grew up in Staten Island. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Brooklyn College in Accounting. After thumbing through a copy of a US News & World Report, a write up on the booming careers in health care administration caught his eye. Kevin went forth to get his MBA in Health Care Administration from Baruch College/Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.

Kevin brings 15 years of progressive experience in non-profit and health care financial management to Erie Family Health Center. He was drawn to Erie for one simple reason - Erie's mission. "Erie's passion to serve the underserved members of Chicago and help patients live healthier lives really motivated and encouraged me to join the Erie family," says Kevin.

It was the staff at Erie Family Health Center - the Erie family - though that really cemented the idea that Erie was his next best step. "The longevity of the staff and their commitment to serving others really showed me the nature of Erie," says Kevin. "The openness and the high level of care that they provided was something to be admired."

Erie Family Health Center is very excited that Kevin has decided to come on board and join our Erie family. Through his guidance, Erie Family Health Center will be able further drive its promise to provide quality health care to Chicago's medically underserved communities with compassion and respect.  Welcome to the Erie family, Kevin!

Stop by and say 'hi' to our new VP of Finance, Kevin Greenberg MBA, at Erie West Town (3rd floor)!

We have friends on Facebook. Videos on Vimeo. Pictures on Flickr. We can upload, download and reload documents. We can share stories and thoughts on our blog. The point is that times they-are-a-changin', and Erie Family Health Center is right there with them. Not only have we changed the look of Spotlight, we have changed the way you can access and read it. ERIE HEALTH TIPS
Enjoy summer weather - without having foresake your skin

April showers have certainly brought May flowers here in Chicago. Along with the blooming tulips, May also brings with it National Melanoma Month. As we pack away our winter coats and slip on our summer shades, it's important to remember to keep our skin as healthy as possible. Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, affects more than 120,000 Americans every year.  While the incidence of most cancers in the United States is decreasing, the incidence of melanoma cases is on the rise.

It is still possible to enjoy the outdoors during the lazy days of summer though. We just have to keep a few precautionary measures in mind. As the largest organ in our body, our skin plays many vital roles in our health, so it's important to keep a watchful eye out for anything that seems abnormal. Knowing a little bit more about melanoma will help us to understand our risk factors and when it's necessary to talk to our physician. Read on to learn about how protect our skin.
