Greetings!

What a year it's been! Between being named one of the Chicago Tribune's Top 100 Workplaces in Chicago in November, becoming Joint Commission Accredited in August to winning the Alford Axelson Award for Nonprofit Managerial Excellence in May, I'm looking forward to a little bit of downtime. But I must admit, I also love the rush of the winter season here in Chicago.... a million great parties, like Salud and the City... the hunt to find the perfect gift, such as giving the gift of health by donating to Joy to Erie... or celebrating the season at the Annual Erie Family Health Center Holiday Party.

While we are busy wrapping up the end of 2010, remember you can still help Erie patients with the click of a button. If you have not done so already,  I am asking you (and your friends, family, colleagues) to follow us on Facebook! Simply click the 'like' button and an anonymous donor will give Erie $10 for every new fan in the month of December! Ask your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors... the more fans we get the more money Erie raises to help those in need.

Wishing you the happiest of holidays! Looking forward to catching up in 2011!
Best wishes,

WHO'S WHO @ ERIE
Sheila Fleming - Winner of the 2010 Adam R. Swider Employee of the Year Award

Every year at Erie Family Health Center's annual holiday party, one Erie employee is recognized for their hard work, dedication, compassion and overall exceptional display of Erie values. This employee is the recipient of the annual Adam R. Swider Employee of the Year Award. The award was established by Mrs. Alice Swider as a memorial to her late husband. Mr. Swider grew up in the West Town community and understood the tremendous barriers of families in need - especially regarding health care. For this reason, he was a strong supporter of Erie Family Health Center's work to provide quality health care for all Chicagoans in need.  Erie is sincerely grateful to Mrs. Swider for her generosity and giving Erie the opportunity to honor one of their employees in this way.

Each Fall, Erie staff members are asked to nominate fellow coworkers to receive this award. After receiving over 35 nominations this year, Erie was pleased to present the 2010 Swider Award to Sheila Fleming, Erie's Director of Behavioral Health Services. Shelia oversees Erie's Behavioral Health program-which includes staff across all Erie's sites. The reach of her program is broad-her staff provides counseling to teens, patients with HIV, adults struggling with depression and much more.

Sheila is a true example of what it means to be an Erie employee through her endless dedication and commitment to the organization. The nomination forms received for Sheila were filled with praise of her accomplishments: "She is an example of compassion and care," said one nominator. "From her own full client caseload, to her supervising a staff of 13, she conducts herself with warmth, honesty and an obvious commitment to care that supports the highest Erie values."

Aetna and Aon Hewitt host toy drives for the new child care centers at Erie Family Health Center

Erie Family Health Center is fortunate to have built strong and lasting relationships with wonderful organizations over the years.  Without these relationships, Erie would not be where it is today. Aetna and Aon Hewitt are two companies that have provided support to Erie Family Health Center. In addition to continually voicing their affirmation and belief in Erie, they've rolled up their sleeves and volunteered their time and talents to bring in resources and complete projects around Erie's health centers. Aetna and Aon Hewitt took part in a book drive for Erie's Reach Out and Read Program, which aims to increase literacy rates among children in low-income areas. Both organizations also helped update the facilities at one of Erie's School-Based Health Centers, by volunteering their time to give the walls a fresh coat of paint.

This year, Aetna and Aon Hewitt have once again taken the initiative to help improve the quality of care Erie provides. Erie is undergoing renovations at its West Town and Humboldt Park Health Centers, and new childcare centers will built at both health centers. Since October, Aetna and Aon Hewitt have been participating in a toy drive to help fully stock the new childcare centers with developmental toys for all ages.  Both organizations have been working tirelessly to gather toys.  Steph Willding, Erie's Development Associate, spoke highly of the efforts of Aetna and Aon Hewitt. "The response has been incredible," says Steph. "Within the first few weeks we had to do an unanticipated pick up because we have had so many toys. Any and all help in gathering toys for the child care centers is appreciated but the response from Aon Hewitt and Aetna thus far has been above and beyond."

Healthy Holiday Habits

Staying away from the cookie tray, the candy dish or the pitcher of eggnog is probably this season's greatest challenge.  We soon notice that 'one small piece of pie,' 'one small glass of wine' and that 'one small gingerbread cookie' has suddenly formed into big problem at our waistline.  As our bathroom scale begins to reveal numbers we've never seen before, we wonder, is there any way to fight the holiday season's battle of the bulge?

The answer? Absolutely!  And it doesn't involve running 12 miles in the blustery cold or locking yourself in your home just to avoid the calorie heavy treats of the season's holiday parties.   All we need to do is follow some simple tips and tricks that will keep our weight down while still keeping our holiday spirits up.
