Erie Family Health Center hosts its first health fair at Erie Helping Hands Health Center  HH Health Fair

As the cool weather begins to replace the sunny days of summer, it's important that we remind ourselves to keep our health on track. And what better way to catch one self up to speed then to attend a health fair?  Erie Helping Hands Health Center in Albany Park hosted its first health fair on-site on October 7th 2010. Visitors, including Erie patients and other members of the community, were able to gather information about a variety of health topics, including oral health care, diabetes care, women's and teens' health issues, as well as a variety of other issues. Attendees were able to receive free blood pressure and glucose screenings as well.

Information about Erie's programs and services were on hand for those interested in becoming a patient. Attendees were able to learn about how they could benefit from the variety of programs that Erie has to offer. Many were interested in either learning more about these Erie services while some decided to become patients of Erie that day!  All in all, it was a successful event and Erie is grateful to all that helped make it possible.

WHO'S WHO @ ERIE
Lynnette Suarez, Behavioral Health Therapist @ Erie's Lending Hands for Life Program awarded for going above and beyond

There is something to be said about providers who make you feel as if you're their primary concern - providers who work diligently to make sure the care you receive is of the utmost quality and excellence. Erie Family Health Center never runs short of these types of providers and Lynnette Suarez is the perfect example of just how much staff cares for each person that steps through Erie's doors.

Lynnette is a behavioral health therapist for the Lending Hands for Life Program at Erie Humboldt Park Health Center. Lending Hands for Life is Erie's HIV/AIDS program, which works to provide patients living with HIV/AIDS services that enable them to live a healthy and active life.  Working with a team that strives to better the lives of those they serve is what Lynnette regards as the most rewarding part of her career. "I have the privilege of working with a  tremendous team of talented people who all pull together to make sure that the patients are taken care of in the best, most comprehensive way possible," says Lynnette. "We inspire each other to do more every day."

Since joining the Erie family, Lynnette has utilized different techniques and skills to help her patients cope with their diagnosis, as well as other traumatic events in their lives. Recently Lynnette introduced a technique called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) into her therapy with her patients. This technique allows clients to reanalyze and replace traumatic memories with a new and more adaptive perception, which ultimately helps to change the way the memories impact her patients. "EMDR allows the person to come to a new conclusion about the trauma and about them so they can place the blame where it really belongs (not on themselves). This is inclusive of a diagnosis of HIV which can be considered a trauma in and of itself," says Lynnette.

Breast Cancer - Prevention in (and out) of the exam room

It's time to 'think pink'. That's right, October is here, so that means one thing - it's National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Whether it's running a 5K, scheduling your yearly mammogram or simply sporting a pink ribbon, there are several ways to bring awareness to this important health issue. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 191,410 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and 40,820 women died from the disease. Next to skin cancer, it's the most common cancer among American women to date. Despite the vast promotion of the importance of mammograms and clinical breast examinations, the CDC reports that more than 7 million women have not had a recent mammogram despite recommendations from their doctor. Although, after we've seen our doctor for regular check-ups and received our yearly mammogram screenings, what's left to do?  We still have 364 days left in the year - and plenty of time to practice some healthy tips that will help us more effectively fight the fight against breast cancer.

What are some ways we can promote breast health all year long?
Click here about to learn about ways to stay healthy 365 days a year.
