Greetings!
Can you believe it's already fall? We survived the summer, which came and went in a matter of minutes, mostly because Erie had so much going on! But don't take off those party hats... we're kicking off the upcoming months with many great events and happenings!
Erie Family Health Center is celebrating our months of hard work in receiving Joint Commission Accreditation. Read News @ Erie below for more details. Erie also is proud to announce Dr. Gus Souri as the recipient of the 2010 Health and Medicine Policy Research Group's Medicine Award in honor of his dedication to improving the lives of others. And don't forget to Save the Date for Salud and the City, an event to benefit all Erie patients on Thursday, February 24 from 6-9p.m. at LaSalle Power Company! More details will be coming soon!!
Finally-it's the last day to make a gift to Erie's back-to-school campaign! With your support, Erie will be able to provide primary medical care, health education, and behavioral health services to more vulnerable children and families at our three school-based health centers. But we still need your help to ensure these kids start the semester off healthy and ready to learn. Donate today and make a difference for the entire school year.
I hope you enjoy this issue of e-Spotlight and I look forward to catching up in October! |

Erie Family Health Center celebrates Joint Commission Accreditation
After long months of preparation, dedication and good old fashion hard work, Erie Family Health Center is honored and thrilled to announce that we have been awarded the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval! Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization, seeks to continuously improve health care for the public by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value. The Joint Commission is the nation's oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. Erie's work toward Joint Commission Accreditation solidifies the fact that Erie has and will continue to provide sound management practices in the day-to-day delivery of safe, high-quality health care. "Achieving accreditation demonstrates Erie Family Health Center has voluntarily sought an independent evaluation of its compliance with state-of-the-art performance standards," says Michael Kulczycki, executive director of The Joint Commission. While all Erie staff helped prepare for The Joint Commission evaluation, Luz Jimenez, Vice President of Clinical Operations at Erie, led the organization's efforts to prepare all nine health centers for their review process. Luz expressed how The Joint Commission Accreditation significantly raises the bar for Erie's promise to provide quality health care and safety. "Achieving accreditation means that as a health care organization we have met the highest standards of care. In preparing for accreditation we were able to move the organization to a culture of safety and quality that permeated every area of the health center," says Luz. Dr. Gus Souri @ Erie Dental Health Center- Albany Park, honored with the 2010 HMPRG Medicine Award
The hard work and dedication of Erie Family Health Center's staff is exemplified every day through their commitment, quality of care and compassion. Dr. Ghassan Souri, DDS, Vice President of Oral Health Services at Erie Family Health Center, was the recipient of 2010 Health and Medicine Policy Research Group's (HMPRG ) Medicine Award in honor of his dedication to improving the lives of others. Dr. Souri is a board certified dentist and a diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. His background and experience aided him in his role as a leader in the launch of Erie's Oral Health Program, which has given oral health care access to thousands of Chicagoans.
The 2010 HMPRG Medicine Award honors its recipient based on their work in relation to several of the HMPRG core values. Dr. Souri has exhibited qualities and accomplishments that go hand in hand with HMPRG's values and has exemplified what it means to provide quality oral health care to the underserved. One value Dr. Souri has been recognized for is the development of effective and quality health care delivery systems. Dr. Souri has been an instrumental figure in consistently developing and strengthening Erie's Oral Health Care Model. "At Erie, we believe that oral health is essential to overall health," says Dr. Souri, "we have a very comprehensive approach to our patients' care; we deliver preventive and very comprehensive treatment utilizing the latest technology available, keeping in mind the consistent monitoring of the quality of care." Dr. Souri helped launch Erie's first dental center in Albany Park in 2005 and open a second dental center in Humboldt Park in 2007. These dental centers predominately serve low-income Latino families and are co-located at Erie primary care sites to help provide better access to Erie's patients.

ERIE HEALTH TIPS
Raising a healthy (and happy) child athlete
For every parent, the start of the school year can be compared to going 0 to 60 mph in about three seconds. The lazy days at the neighborhood pool, family barbeques and the overall relaxed daily schedules are suddenly things of the past. Those casual summer activities are quickly replaced with car pooling, school supply shopping, earlier bedtimes and late homework nights.
The busyness of a new school year can be doubled with the start of the school athletic season. Children and teens that play more than one sport can find themselves participating in some form of athletics throughout the whole year. With practices usually following the school day, children usually don't get home until early evening, only to just begin the day's homework load. Weekends are also taken up by games or even additional practices.
So how can we keep our kid athletes active while staying healthy?
