Greetings!
Summer is halfway over but that does not mean Erie Family Health Center is slowing down! We are moving full speed ahead on many upcoming projects and changes.
Next month two of our larger health center, Erie Humbodlt Park and Erie West Town, will be undergoing major renonvations. Look for pictures and videos in upcoming issues of e-Spotlight to check out our progress and we hope to see you at the Grand Openings early next year!
In this issue you can learn more about the Food Pantry at one of our school-based sites, Erie Henson. Have you been out and about this summer season in the city? Be sure to read the article covering ways to keep yourself hydrated in the Chicago heat! Erie also is excited to tell you more about the launch of Erie Connect, our first internal employee Web site!
I hope you enjoy this issue of e-Spotlight and I look forward to catching up in August! |

What's new at Erie this month?
Erie Family Health Center knows employee satisfaction directly impacts our patients. To help boost staff morale and ultimately provide an even higher level of quality care, a survey was administered in 2009 to determine the areas for improvement. A common occurring theme was found-the lack of structure for internal documents and information. To help remedy this problem Erie decided to take on a new endeavor: Erie Connect!
On July 19, 2010 Erie launched our new employee-only Web site, Erie Connect. The tool was designed to give staff access to commonly used forms and links and is accessible from all nine Erie sites. Erie Connect, designed by an outside team of consultants and an internal task force, aides staff in not only locating forms but also providing an area for announcements, a database for internal referrals, a staff directory, the ability to electronically schedule conference room reservations and much more! Erie's hope is that the easier we can make our employees job every day, the more focused staff can be on serving our patients.
The project was funding by Prince Charitable Trust, a foundation that supports a broad array of services to enhance the quality of life of its citizens. Erie looks forward to implementing even more features and functions of Erie Connect in the next few months! Stay tuned to learn more about what is New @ Erie!

CENTER ROLL CALL @ ERIE
Learn more about Erie Henson School-Based Health Center and the Healthy Kids Distribution
More than 678,000 people in Chicago and Cook County, including 250,000 children, receive emergency food each year. In an effort to reduce hunger in their own community, Henson Elementary School, located in North Lawndale, is working to bring nutritious food options to neighborhood families. Teaming up with the staff of Erie Henson School-Based Health Center and the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the school hosts a program called Healthy Kids Distribution, providing healthy food choices to the families of students in need.
"This program aligns perfectly with Erie's mission to increase access to resources that shouldn't be considered privileges, but as human rights in an effort to lead a healthy life" says Tiosha Goss, Erie's Coordinator for School Based and Oral Health Programs. "Furthermore, it supports Erie's mission to provide resources to those in need."
Tiosha assists with program outreach and supports the program's food pantry volunteers during days of food distribution. Working with community agencies, Henson parents, AmeriCorps volunteers, Erie support staff, and Chicago Public School staff, she helps ensure the program's goals stay at the forefront of their operations. The program offers family-focused services, encourages healthy eating and living, and aims to provide a minimum of 50 families with healthy foods at no cost to them. "There are many things that I enjoy about working with the program," Tiosha says. "Getting to know the families that come to the distributions and playing an integral role in providing an invaluable resource to the community."

ERIE HEALTH TIPS
Hydration 101
Do you ever watch commercials for pool equipment, vacation destinations or even sunscreen? Everyone is usually running around, playing sports, or splashing around in the water - all while basking in the hot summer sun. No one ever seems to be concerned with how these people are staying hydrated. Ok, maybe that's not the first thing you think when you watch summertime commercials. But really - are we supposed to believe that these people can run around in the hot and humid weather without ever bothering to take a swig of water? Let's be serious, shall we?
I know what you're thinking. We've suffered through winter. We've endured the bitter temperatures. We shoveled the never ending piles of snow. Now, when the sun is finally shining and we can spend time outside without a twenty pound parka on, there are a slew of problems - like dehydration- to worry about.
