Erie celebrated the second annual Golden Toothbrush Awards on May 25! Who was the winner...

As you know, Erie Family Health Center held the second annual Golden Toothbrush Awards Luncheon to shed light on the challenges Erie's patients face in accessing dental care and to recognize oral health as an integral part of a person's overall health. The event was held on May 25, 2010 at the InterContinental Chicago. Nearly 300 people were in attendance and nearly $140,000 was raised at the event to help continue to grow Erie's oral health program and help  patients like Luis, who was featured in the event video.

And now what you've been waiting for! Who was the 2010 Golden Toothbrush Award winner??? The three finalists for the 2010 Golden Toothbrush Award were: Reshma Dhake, DDS, Illinois Children's Healthcare Foundation and Jason Grinter, DDS.

And the winner is... Dr. Jason Grinter!

Erie would like to thank all of its sponsors who contributed to event, including the generous Title Sponsor, UnitedHealthcare.

Sunscreen 101

It's amazing how trends come and go over the years. Leisure suits, poodle skirts, platform shoes and leggings have had their 15 minutes of fame over the past decades.  Let's be honest, if we never have to witness the return of the leisure suit or belly shirts, we'll be grateful. Some styles of decades past, however, just won't quit. Tanning is one example. Ever since Coco Chanel paraded around the French Rivera with her sun-kissed skin, women everywhere have been attempting to emulate her look.

Unfortunately, tanning falls under the trend category of "dangerous."  Too much sun exposure can lead to painful burns, premature aging and in some cases, skin cancer. A few ways to prevent sun damage is to wear clothing that covers exposed skin, stay in the shade and avoid being outside when the sun is at its highest point in the sky. Covering up in a long sleeved shirt and pants at the beach really doesn't seem all that appealing. Either does trying to play volleyball or Frisbee under a shaded tree. What about sunscreen? Isn't it the number one way to protect ourselves from the sun's dangerous ways? Not necessarily. It definitely can be utilized, but let's separate fact from fiction in terms of sunscreen effectiveness.
