Erie Launches First-ever Blog
Erie Family Health Center is now blogging!
The impact blogging will have on the future of communication cannot be known, but the current impact is profound. Today, blogging is one of the most popular ways for the everyday person to reach a large audience. Politicians have utilized blogs to campaign for office. In 2005 Fortune Magazine listed the eight blogs on the internet most influential in the world of business. Some bloggers have even moved to radio and television, while others have published books based on their blog concept.

On Friday, January 15, 2010 Erie Family Health Center became a part of the blogosphere. Beats Per Minute, Erie's new blog, is now up and running at www.eriefamilyhealth.org/bpm. Readers will find written articles from Erie staff as well as links to other health-related blog sites. On Wednesdays, "Health Beats" will feature the top five health stories of the week.  Check out "Erie Beats" for organization events and special happenings around our nine health centers. Guest bloggers also will be making an appearance every month for special features.

Erie is proud to be one of the first community health centers to have its own blog. Beats Per Minute will allow readers to learn a bit more about Erie Family Health Center and its mission.  Erie's blog will allow our staff to express their thoughts and opinions in a new way that is different and unique than other forms of media. Erie will reach out to more of the Chicago community than ever before. A big part of what will make Erie's blog popular is the ability for readers to leave comments on blog postings, creating an interactive format for both the blogger and the readers. Between Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, Vimeo and now blogging, it is hard to imagine what will be next for Erie Family Health Center... although we hear Oprah needs a replacement...

Erie Family Health Centers All Equipped with an Electronic Health Records System

Erie Completes EHRS Implementation a Year Ahead of Schedule

In early 2005, Erie Family Health Center set the goal to have all sites using an Electronic Health Record System (EHRS) by 2011. On January 7, 2010, Erie launched the new system at our last two health centers-Erie Henson Health Center and Erie Westside Health Center. Erie completed this project a year ahead of time, changing the way Erie serves its patients forever.  "Erie can say with pride that we are 100% electronic for our medical records," says President and CEO Dr. Lee Francis.

Why does having an Electronic Health Record System really matter? The EHRS is a technological advancement that improves the quality of care we provide and helps reduce health disparities in areas such as diabetes, obesity and low birth-weight. Using EHRS, medical providers have remote access to a patient's medical record, allowing them to respond to patient health concerns from any location, at any time of day.  The system also reminds medical providers when a patient is due for preventive services or lab tests, and alerts them to drug interactions and allergies. All nine of Erie's health centers are now linked by an electronic medical record system and paper medical records are a thing of the past.

ERIE HEALTH TIPS
Beat Chicago Winter Skin this season
Tired of dry winter skin? Learn tips on how to help your skin this winter.

Chicagoans are special people.  We give ourselves an hour to get to work in the morning - even when our place of employment is a few miles away.  We know the major Chicago landmarks in terms of their El stops.  We have a baseball team that holds the record for the longest streak without winning a World Series - and yet some of us still believe every year is 'the year.' And most importantly, we understand our chilling climate is not only found in the Artic. Yes, we Chicagoans are indeed special people. Our traffic is congested, our sense of direction is sharp, our support for our sports teams is undying - and our weather is below freezing.

During these frigid months, some of our first actions in the morning involve cranking up the heat and jumping into a steaming hot shower.  Unfortunately, these types of daily rituals will wreak havoc on our skin.  Considering Chicagoans dislike the cold just about as much as we loathe the Packers, it can be difficult to forego scorching water and high thermostat temperatures- so instead we should put what these habits do to our skin into perspective.
The winter is one of the driest times of the year, weather wise.  Besides bitter cold wind, the winter weather can also suck moisture out of the air - and out of our skin.

This can leave us with a 'tight' feeling and can lead to flaking, cracking, redness and itching. Considering our skin is the largest organ in our body and acts as a 'shell' of protection for our other organs, it is extremely important we keep it healthy.
Still not convinced to turn down the temperature and pile on the moisturizer? Consider extreme dryness of the skin can lead to deep cracks or fissures which can cause severe bleeding and itching while also acting as a passage way for bacteria to enter into internal organs, causing a serious type of skin infection called Cellulitis. An effective method to help us Chicagoans prevent the damaging effects of dryness and keep our skin healthy and happy can be found in the mnemonic MATCH.
