A SPECIAL MESSAGE FOR 8TH GRADE PARENTS WHOSE STUDENTS WILL BE INCOMING FRESHMEN FOR THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR

Welcome, Future Sabercats!

Thank you for attending Parent Night this past week.  Now that we have added you to our SaberLinks PTO email list, you will be receiving these Saguaro Happenings emails each week and our LinkUp newsletter at the beginning of each month.  Because your email addresses and names were hand-written, a few names may be misspelled.  If your name is misspelled, please let us know the correct spelling by emailing lauralewisjones@cox.net.  In addition, we would appreciate it if you would  let other parents know that they may sign up for these emails by clicking on the following link:  EMAIL REGISTRATION.  Thank you!

PROJECT GRADUATION COMMITTEE MEETING:

January 17th, 6:30 pm, Media Center

Grad Cat

PROJECT GRAD UPDATES:

Thanks again, senior parents for your response to our request for $100 donations per student to help defray our costs of Project Grad!  VERY SPECIAL thanks to those of you who have sponsored another student unable to make a donation.  It's heart-warming to see such generosity! Again, thank you! As a reminder, for those of you who are able, we'd really appreciate your donations by January 15, if possible, so that we can better determine our additional fundraising needs.

TO ALL SHS PARENTS, NOT JUST SENIORS:
WE NEED GIFT CARDS AND BOXERS
Underclassmen parents, remember when your child is a senior, you are going to really appreciate the help of the entire SHS family, so do your part to help!  The wonderful ladies in the office will accept your donations, gift cards and boxer donations!
GIFT CARDS:  Please consider donating gift cards - any amount, any store - whatever store your child would like (Starbucks, Lox, Target, Walmart, restaurants, movies, etc.)! We'll use the gift cards as prizes in our casino, on the bus rides and we may combine smaller  gift cards for larger gifts in our Senior Raffle.  So many businesses are offering additional gift cards with gift card purchases (for example Lox Stock & Bagels $100 for $125 in gift cards; Cold Stone Creamery $10 for $20 in gift cards, etc.) SENIOR PARENTS: WHY NOT MAKE YOUR $100 SUGGESTED DONATION IN GIFT CARDS, RATHER THAN CASH - WIN, WIN, RIGHT?
BOXERS:  SHS parents, please be on the lookout for new boxers to be use as prizes for Boxer Bingo, a favorite and long-time traditional Project Grad game! Any sizes, the wilder the better!

SUSD AND COMMUNITY NEWS:

A MESSAGE FROM SCOTTSDALE PARENT COUNCIL:

Dear Parents and Friends of Public Education,

Just a reminder that for our first meeting of 2012, we invite you to join your SPC Board at the State Capitol on Wednesday January 18 at 9:30 am, at the Rose Garden.   The physical address of the Capitol is 1700 W. Washington.  The House and the Senate flank the Capitol and the rose garden is between the House and Senate.  We will have an SPC sign- so look for us!

Directions:
The best place to park is by the Executive offices. Take I-10 to 19th Ave. Go left (south) at the exit.
Take 19th Ave. to Adams- turn left. You will see a parking lot on the south side of Adams where you can park.
Once you have parked, head to Jefferson on foot- Jefferson is the street south of Adams.  Follow Jefferson past the Governor's offices.  You will see a pathway on your left that leads into the rose garden.  If you get to 17th Ave., just turn left and walk up a  bit.  You will see the Capitol on your left and the rose garden right in front of it.

Once at the Capitol, we will have a brief presentation on how to get involved and engage your elected officials. Those who join us will also have a chance to register on ALIS, the Arizona Legislative Information System. By registering one time in person, you will then be able to comment on any bill that comes before our State legislators from the comfort of your own home! This is a great way for you to let our elected official know that we care and are watching the laws that affect our children and their schools.

If Wednesday is just a bad day for you, but you still want to be registered on ALIS, fret not! You can download our proxy from the SPC website, and either e-mail it to advisor@scottsdaleparentcouncil.org or send it to SPC c/o SUSD Education Center, 3811 N. 44th St. Phoenix, AZ 85018. With your permission, an SPC representative will register you. Once registered, you can change your password to guard your security.

Our public schools have faced some tough times in recent years; thankfully, with advocacy and dedication from our parents and district leaders, SUSD has been able to maintain the high caliber teachers and programs we expect for our children. Please make a point to be engaged in the process that governs our children's schools this 2012 legislative session. Should you have any questions, we are here to help get answers.

Together we can make a difference!
Your SPC Executive Board
