GIVING CLIENTS "FOOD FOR THOUGHT" Good Nutrition on a Tight Budget
How can parents struggling with limited means or food insecurity put good nutrition on the menu? Building on "Food for Thought," Sesame Workshop's bilingual (English-Spanish) outreach to food insecure families, the Center is conducting interactive workshops with clients to provide nutrition basics and valuable tips on coping with uncertain access to affordable, nutritious food.

Dr. Randi Feldman led the first workshop early this month in Bedford Hills. "Eating and living well is not exclusive to high income groups," she said. Dozens of Center clients listened intently as Dr. Feldman explained (in Spanish) how to incorporate fresh foods, whole grains and efficient sources of protein into the family diet quickly and cheaply.

Board member Shirley Buontempo organizes the workshops, which include Sesame Workshop videos and a "Food for Thought" resource kit to use at home. Volunteers from Somers and Fox Lane HS got in on the act, providing fun, food-related activities for children while parents eagerly absorbed Dr. Feldman's advice. And then, healthy snacks for all.
