NEW YEAR MEANS A NEW START WITH CLIENTS

The beginning of the year brings a whirlwind of activity to the Center: every client who accesses services must obtain a new (free) "swipe card" once a year. The cards record and track each household's use of Center services.

The registration process involves a personal, one-on-one chat with Noya Guerrero, Assistant Director for Client Services, or other Center staff, to confirm the client's address and household information. Most importantly, annual registration enables Center personnel to have a focused, confidential conversation with each client.

"Our mission is to provide temporary help," said Executive Director Sherry Wolf. "We keep in touch with each household to understand their situation and help them access services that can lead to self-sufficiency."

TEACHING JOB SKILLS: FOSTERING SUCCESS
| It's graduation time for participants in the Center's "Basics of Construction" classes, led by instructor Nelson Guerrero.
The twelve-session curriculum covers a full range of construction and cost estimation skills, including reading architectural plans, installing windows, metalwork, septic, drainage, and more. More than 50 men, many with years of work experience in construction, successfully completed the course, and many shared stories of how the class benefited them. One student, after learning about masonry and pouring concrete, spoke with his construction company boss about putting those new skills into practice. The student got a better-paying position and the company no longer hires sub-contractors to install footings. Course developer and instructor Nelson Guerrero knows the classes have a positive impact. "Everybody responds to the lessons," he said. "And it's always exciting to hear their stories of success and personal improvement." These and other Center classes are supported by a Westchester Community Foundation grant and through private donations to the McTavey Tyler Rebuilding Lives Fund. |

PUTTING NUTRITION ATOP THE FOOD LIST
| The Center is working to keep good nutrition front and center, even for those who may be food insecure. Fresh vegetables will continue to be available at the Center's food pantry throughout these cold winter months, thanks to a $5,000 grant from the MBIA Foundation. "Fresh greens are hard to come by and expensive in winter," said Clare Murray, the Center's Director of Operations. "This generous support from MBIA enables us to purchase and make a range of healthy fruits and vegetables available to our clients." |

AND COMING SOON: SESAME WORKSHOP'S FOOD FOR THOUGHT
| With well-prepared teaching aids and useful materials for participants that include familiar Sesame Street muppet friends, Sesame Workshop's "Food for Thought" learning sessions provide practical tips on how to eat well on a budget and why nutritious choices matter. The Center is excited to be among the first to roll out this exciting program. Stay tuned for more details. |
