New Service for La Paz

We are now sending announcements for dogs lost and found in La Paz and surrounding areas via email to the more than 300 local people on Baja Dog's Newsletter list. If you have lost your dog or if you have found a dog that appears to belong to someone,  send us the information (recent picture and general description of the dog, breed, date and address where it was lost or found) and we will distribute it as quickly as possible.

This is a free service.  We do invite you to consider donating to the refuge (money or even a bag of dog food). Your donations are essential to keeping the Shelter open and for us to offer this type of service to the community.

Volunteer News
Volunteers, Volunteers!
We would like to welcome two new volunteers, Dra. Vanessa Labrada and Claudia Hernandez Camacho, Biologist. Vanessa will be taking the photo's of the dogs at the refugio and Claudia is in charge of the Lost Dog alerts!
We have good support from the local community and a number of key volunteers help us from afar - in Vancouver, Nanaimo, San Francisco, Los Angeles, to name a few locations.  We still have some volunteer jobs that would take only a couple of hours a week.
If you're interested, send us an e-mail.
Education News
Our Calendars have been our main educational tool this last month, along with our appearances on TV and Radio promoting both the calendar and our message to Spay and Neuter.  We also appeared in the December issue of Mama Gallina Magazine.

Meet Our Permanent Residents

Buffalo Before                   Buffalo After
This week we are featuring 8 year old BUFFALO.
Buffalo was actually the third dog to enter the old refugio on the highway. Out of the 814 dogs we have helped todate, Buffy is 003. He had virtualy no hair when we first saw him. He was a gentle boy right from the first day he came to live with us. He needed a lot of  baths to treat his mange but he never complained. Over the years Buffalo has been paired with different female dogs but as each female was adopted and left him for her forever home, we would see what seemed like a depression in him. He stopped chasing butterflies and geckos. It was decided that the next female mate would be a hard to place dog.
Buffalo and his
new partner, Izzy are housed in a 20 x 20 corral that has a tree, shade cloth and a  beautiful large cement doghouse provided by a generous man named Russ. It gets very cold and windy so the cement house faces away from the winter winds. The dogs eat their breakfast each morning and get a fresh pail of water daily. In the evening the nice new sweaters are put on Buffalo and Izzy to keep them warm at night.
These two dogs actually seem to know when Tuesday rolls around. This is the day Shawn and her crew walk ALL the dogs. They go on nice long walks or runs (depending oon the dog's health) They also have a walk on Fridays.
A family in Regina wanted to adopt Buffalo but due to his recurring mange and heart problem, the veterinarian said no, so Stacy has offerred to become Buffalo's "Godmother" Her donation will go directly to Buffalo's care, warm blankets, vitamins, canned food as his teeth are bad and in the future medicine if needed.
Over the next few months as you get to know our permanent residents, you can choose to become their Godparent. Each of the 6 dogs will only have one Godparent. You will get updated photos and a monthly report. This is an ideal project for  school classroom!!

Our Christmas Noel.

Noel Jan 2012

                 Noel 2 Jan 2012

On Christmas Day I received a call to pick up a dying dog that was lying in front of a house in Comitan. When I arrived, there was indeed a small dog. His face was swollen and he was very weak. As we lifted him into the car for the drive to the refugio, he looked up at me and tried to wag his tail. His big brown eyes begged me to help him.

When we arrived at the refugio there were many volunteers, among them a young lady, Courtney Cowan and her family. Everyone gathered around the little dog and wondered how we could help him. There were no veterinarians open on Christmas. We called our manager, Mario who was at home with his family and asked his advice. The next thing we knew Mario had arrived to help the little Christmas dog. Mario did what he could and we wrapped the little guy in blankets to keep him warm,  and we all left the refugio as it was getting dark.

Noel survived the night and was taken to the vet the next morning. The Doctor should his head and told us he did not think Noel would survive but it is 15 days later and he is getting a bit stronger each day. We think he was attacked by a pack of dogs His neck has many deep cuts. They also bit into a nerve and his front legs tremble and he can't hold his head up too well but he ALWAYS wags his little tail and tries to come forward when he hears a person walking close by.

Noel will be at the refugio for a long long time, maybe forever. Noel has his own Fairy Dogchildren, Ava Burger, Cami and Ella Stichler who will be donating on his behalf.

Noel was our little Christmas miracle!

REFUGE NEWS
This Month's Wish List!
Dog food, dog food and more dog food! We are also in need of used towels or old blankets we can cut to size.

Shawn has done an incredible job with her dog walking team.  If you need some exercise, or if you miss having a dog in your life, e-mail Shawn .. or drop by the Refugio either Tuesday or Friday between 9 am and 1 pm and  she'll show you the ropes and leashes!

Sadly, our donated car has broken down and is too costly to repair, so we have had a difficult time transporting dogs in need.  A remaining need we have is for a new vehicle, or at least new to us that is imported to Mexico and in good repair.
