Baja Dogs now has monthly refuge tours.
On January 22, 2011, Baja Dogs held it's first regular monthly Refuge tour. We felt it was quite a success with 8 people attending.
It was a great opportunity to learn how the refuge operates and to see all the wonderful dogs we have out there. We ended up with some very significant new volunteers.
The second tour was held on March 5th with 14 people attending. Every single person in this group was new to the refuge. And once again we have gained some extremely important new volunteers.
The next refuge tour is scheduled for this Saturday, April 16th. We will meet at the Tecate store in Centenario around 9am and start the tour at 9:30. If you are interested in attending this or any future tours please contact cindycrane2000@yahoo.ca
If you can't make the April tour, the last one until November will be Saturday, May 14th at 9am with a 8:30 meeting time due to the warmer weather. |

HERE'S THE BUZZ ON ANOTHER NEW CANADIAN! | |

They say when you find "the one", you'll know. While surfiing through animal rescue sites one night, I happened upon the profile of a scruffy tan terrier mix on Petfinder. One look at the expression on his sweet face and I KNEW. We weren't exactly looking to add a fourth dog to our family, but it soon became apparent that little Buzz was meant to be.
Buzz grew up as a stray scrounging for food on the streets of La Paz, Mexico. One fateful day in January he was spotted on a busy street by Dhorea, the founder of Baja Dogs Rescue. A kind man offered to catch the frightened little dog so she could take him back to the safety of the shelter. Buzz (known then as Sammy Bart) was in terrible shape - malnourished, suffering from mange, and infested with ticks and fleas.
He had badly infected gashes on his head, likely the result of human abuse or a fight with another dog. His left front leg was also injured and his upper incisor teeth were missing. Despite his compromised condition, Buzz continued to wag his tail.
Having never rescued an adult street dog before, I am astounded daily by his progress. Buzz lives in the moment. He has let go of his tragic past and overcomes hurdles faster than I ever could have imagined. He accepts that laminate floors, televisions, noisy household appliances and telephones are all part of living in a home. When he first met our three dogs, he tucked his tail in fear and prepared to defend himself. Now he plays with absolute joyful abandon. Oncoming traffic no longer stops him in his tracks and he has discovered that couches are definitely better than sidewalks. Most importantly though, he has come a long way in trusting that nobody is going to hurt him anymore and lucky dogs do, in fact, get fed every day!

Yes, we saved Buzz from a miserable existence but he has more than repaid us with the lessons we have already learned from him- live in the now, appreciate the simple things in life and most importantly, LOVE!
For more information on how you can help the dogs of La Paz, please visit their website at www.bajadogslapaz.org and share the dream! |

I AM AN ANIMAL RESCUER |
I am an Animal Rescuer
Words that unite those of us who feel their pain and heal their scars with love and care.
I Am an Animal Rescuer My job is to assist God's creatures I was born with the need to fulfill their needs I take in new family members without plan, thought, or selection I have bought dog food with my last dime I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand I have hugged someone vicious and afraid I have fallen in love a thousand times and I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body
I have Animal Friends and friends who have animal friends I don't often use the word "pet" I notice those lost at the road side And my heart aches I will hand raise a field mouse And make friends with a vulture I know of no creature unworthy of my time
I want to live forever if there aren't animals in Heaven But I believe there are Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind? We may be master of the animals, But the animals have mastered themselves Something people still haven't learned
War and Abuse makes me hurt for the world But a rescue that makes the news gives me hope for mankind We are a quiet but determined army And making a difference every day
There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan nothing more rewarding than saving a life No higher recognition than watching them thrive There is no greater joy than seeing a baby play who only days ago, was too weak to eat I am an Animal Rescuer My work is never done, My home is never quiet My wallet is always empty But my heart is always full

BITS AND BITES | |

A WARNING TO PET LOVERS:
Please be advised that there are many cases of Distemper and Parvovirus in La Paz presently. Please ensure your pets are up to date with their vaccinations.
The following information is courtesy of Baja Insider, this information could save your dogs life:
Always have a bottle of hydrogen peroxide(agua oxigenada) with you when walking the beach with your dog. Force some down its throat if you think he/she has eaten puffer fish or anything else that you feel might make them sick. It will make them throw up immediately and should get rid of most of the poison or immediately phone you Vet. The death from the liver of this fish is quick and violent. It can be as short a time as 45 minutes.
If you have any pet warnings that you think should be shared here please send them to Cindy @
cindycrane2000@yahoo.ca |

IN MEMORY OF... | |
In memory of our furry friends
Dee, recently lost her beloved Carlos. Chi, who was later named Carlos was a little chihuahua who had been locked out of a woman's home in La Paz because she said he was broken due to a pin in his leg coming loose after having surgery. This poor little guy sat for days in front of her gate hoping to be let back in. But when questioned, the woman said he was broken and she wanted a new one. He was so very kindly adopted and loved by Dee of Vancouver Isaland. Baja Dogs wants to thank Dee for making his last year on earth the best one! Our hearts go out to you Dee!

We understand the pain & trauma of saying goodbye
to a beloved dog. We've felt it ourselves. Through the sadness
and tears, we've struggled -like you- with the question of how best
to memorialize the love of a dog that will never fade.

Because we care, we help. But we can't do it alone.
Baja Dogs receives NO government funding or assistance. Your generous donations and membership fees help us continue to supply food, kennel care and vaccines against deadly diseases like Parvo and Distemper. They help us rescue dogs in need, and care for those without a voice who are injured, abused and neglected. The best way to help is to make a monthly membership pledge of $5, $10, $25, $50 or $100 ... but any help you can offer is always greatly appreciated.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
