New corrals under construction |
When Dhorea got married in April, she requested that her guests donate to the refugio in lieu of gifts. The donations were used to construct three new corrals (each with a cement dog house) and to purchase the much-needed cisterna. Big thanks to Home Depot who gave Baja Dogs La Paz a big discount on the cistern, to everyone who donated, and to Mario and Daniel for all their hard work!

Baja Magic Cookbook |
Hats off again to Ann Hazard who has donated several of her incredibly informative cookbooks "Cooking with Baja Magic Dos". Not only does it contain mouth watering Mexican recipes but includes all sorts of info about ingredients local to the Baja and some very interesting facts. This book normally retails for 28.95 US. For a suggested donation of $15 US or 170 pesos you get a great cookbook and you will be helping the shelter. To reserve your copy, please email Dhorea or let Board members Maggie, Penny or Maureen know you would like a copy.
Happy birthday to a wonderful advocate, Michael Raffanti of Washington State who has asked that in lieu of birthday gifts his friends donate to Baja Dogs. Thank you Michael and have a great time at your party!

Drs. Enrique and Lucy Blanco are hoping this info will help you keep your pets safe. The higado (liver) of the botete fish, known locally as the puffer fish. can kill your pet within 20 - 40 minutes. Symptoms are as follows: temperature of the dog will soar to 40 degrees C, diarrhea will be a brilliant green, muscles will shake uncontrollably, pupils will be dilated and almost frozen with no reaction to light.
Sadly, Dhorea recently experienced this with her husband's dogs. Achilles was dead and stiff within 30 minutes; Sophia didn't ingest as much and was able to be saved. These fish have big spines, are off white in color, and are found all over the beach. Occasionally fishermen will clean them and throw the liver onto the beach where your dog may stumble upon it. Please be careful, keep your pets safe; it is truly a horrible death to witness.

| | We have lots to say after our visit but will only put forth the facts as we know them. Dogs are currently picked up and taken to the new dog pound near San Pedro where they are kept for 3 days. There are rooms for students from the University to "learn" about the dogs. As soon as the City determines who will pay for gas for the truck or trucks, these vehicles will be sent into the colonias to clean the streets or in other words, pick up all stray dogs. There is certainly a need for a pound that will respond to calls on vicious dogs. There has not been a crematorium built yet. Our initial thoughts were to go to this facility and bring some of these dogs that we felt were adoptable to our refugio. This is NOT possible as these dogs are not segregated and we would have no way of knowing if they had come into contact with distemper or parvo and therefore would be exposing our dogs to these diseases. Please emphasize to your neighbors if they love their dogs, keep them inside their yards.

Because we care, we help. But we can't do it alone.
Baja Dogs receives NO government funding or assistance. Your generous donations and membership fees help us continue to supply food, kennel care and vaccines against deadly diseases like parvo and distemper. They help us rescue dogs in need, and care for those without a voice who are injured, abused and neglected. The best way to help is to make a monthly membership pledge of $10, $25, $50 or $100 ... but any help you can offer is always greatly appreciated.
