This month we wanted to recognize our wonderful kennel care workers, Claudia and Mario. It takes a special type of employee to do the work they do.
Claudia arrives at 8am, starting her day by letting the younger, weaker and older dogs out of their sleeping cages. The puppies usually leave quite a mess and she knows after dishing out breakfast and fresh water that she will have to clean out the pens and cages. She knows exactly who can eat side by side, who can't and who our little piggies are. If some don't seem their usual playful selves, Claudia brings them in to wait for the doctor. Most of her 5 hour shift is spent cleaning and dealing with health issues.
Mario arrives at 1pm, and Claudia leaves. He checks all medical information that has been left by Claudia, and gives a second feeding to the ones who need it. He checks all the dogs, updates their records and cleans the outside yard around the corals. Around 4pm as the day cools, Mario starts to bring in the old, young and weaker dogs and starts to prepare for the evening. The task of showing people around the refugio usually falls to him as well. They both work 6 days a week, which is common in Mexico. Claudia and Mario are much, much more than cleaners. They are our first line of defense when something is wrong with one of our 'guests'. And they care -- about the dogs, about the health of the dogs, and about excelling at their jobs. They are truly our unsung heroes. | |

Lonely Paws Club
Scruffy is a Maltese cross. He's a fairly small dog, but sturdy. He was found with Charlie and they have been best buds since arriving at the shelter. He would like to be a lap dog but is a bit too big! He's a very friendly boy who loves to run around and play and go for walks on a leash.

Our new refuge has a separate building that we use as a hospital/isolation ward. Currently it is very sparsely outfitted. This is where any new dog will come first. They will be cleaned of all ticks and fleas, given a medical check up and then it will be determined if the dog can go to the outside isolation pen or needs to stay in this area for medical treatment. All new dogs coming in are preventatively treated for Ehrlichiosis. It is a 21 day antibiotic treatment. We will be writing more in the next issue about this horrid disease which is caused by ticks. It is very prevalent in Baja Sur and can have a deadly outcome. The new dogs will be kept isolated from the general population for 21 days to ensure they do not have any other problems.

Because we care, we help. But we can't do it alone.
Your generous donations and membership fees help us continue to supply food, kennel care and vaccines against deadly diseases like parvo and distemper. They help us rescue dogs in need, and care for those without a voice who are injured, abused and neglected. Please help in any way you can.
