Rachel,

I thought I would send you some of the written reflections of our small group that attended the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. Below is a link to our website where we posted daily updates (each written by a different youth) on the trip to keep the congregation up to date on the amazing things that we experienced...

Young Leaders Stand for Welcome

An Interview with Taryn Connelly

Click this link to view an interview with Taryn Connelly, a member of the Southeastern Synod Lutheran Youth Organization (SESLYO), with Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS).  The interview is featured on the LIRS advocacy blog.

Taryan and other members of SESLYO introduced a synod resolution on welcoming refugees and immigrants that seemed particularly important, both for the content and for the way youth leaders stepped up to a leadership role.

Hope is as Strong as A Woman's Arms

"Hope is as Strong as A Woman's Arms: Mobilizing Amidst Violence Against Women and Girls in Africa and Its Diaspora" was the theme of the inaugural African and African Diasporic Women in Religion and Theology Conference held in Legon, Ghana, July 8 - 14, 2012.

Dr. Beverly Wallace (former Assistant to the Bishop of the Southeastern Synod and a current Assistant Professor at Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta) and Dr. Rosetta Ross (Professor of Religion at Spelman College, Atlanta, a coordinator of the event, and spouse of the Rev. Ron Bonner, Atonement, Atlanta) both attended this historical consultation and conference.  A total of forty Christian and Muslim African and African American womanist theologians, NGOs, and other invited guests from Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and the United States met at the Talitha Qumi Center at Trinity Theological Seminary in Legon to discuss issues of violence against African and African American women.

Time was spent discussing sex trafficking and practices of violence supposedly supported by religion and strategizing responses of womanist religious scholars using indigenous resources.  Projects were developed for further collaboration among African and African diaspora women in religion and theology. A glimpse of the conference can be viewed on YouTube "Womanist Ghana Conference."  This work from a Lutheran perspective will be discussed at the upcoming Conference of International Black Lutherans (CIBL), the Black Teaching Theologians of the ELCA event to be held in Chicago this November.

Pictured:  A portion of part of the U.S. delegation, including professors from various schools around the country, Dr. Wallce and Dr. Mercy Oduyoye.

The consultation/conference was co-sponsored by the American Academy of Religion's Womanist Approaches to Religion and Society Group and by The Circle of African Women Theologians. It was hosted by Dr. Mercy Oduyoye, the mother of African feminist theology and director of Talitha Qumi Center, which orchestrates and accompanies women's efforts towards gender justice and gender sensitivity. Dr. Wallace's participation was funded by the ELCA's Justice for Women and the Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta.

Earlier this year, Dr. Wallace also attended the Womanist Gala and Conference where Dr. Rosetta Ross was honored as one of the 25 Womanist Legends in the country. (For information on Womanist theology, see Dr. Wallace's YouTube lecture held at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Atlanta on Hagar from a Womanist Perspective--http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PHfBv3L-qE).
