A Meditation on Family | |
by the Rev. Dr. Delmer Chilton
Assistant to the Bishop
ELCA-Southeastern Synod
(Preached in Mary Horner Walker Memorial Presbyterian Church, Claudville, VA on Saturday, June16, at the Hubbard Family Reunion on the 100th Anniversary of Albert and Millie Hubbard building the house in which they raised their family of 10 children.)
Matthew 7:24-25 - "Built On a Rock"
When I was a little kid Grandma Hubbard often called me "Frank." She didn't do it deliberately or as a joke; she did it, she said, because I reminded her of him so much.
His picture hung in her bedroom. I used to go and stand on the couch so that my head was as high as his next to the picture and look across the room at the big mirror on the back of her dresser, trying to see if we looked anything alike. We didn't, not really.
Albert and Millie Hubbard and their 10 children. Pr. Chilton's mother, Dorothy Hubbard Chilton, is front, center. Frank, who died in WWII, is to her right. Grandma said it was not so much the way I looked but rather the way I acted that made her think of Frank. And the thing is, I have no way to know anything about any of that. He died over ten years before I was born, on a ship in the Pacific. He was nineteen at the time.

LMA partners with City of Clay, Alabama for Tornado Recovery
The City of Clay, Alabama and Mayor Ed McGuffie are proud to announce a joint partnership with Lutheran Ministries of Alabama (LMA) to assist survivors of the 2012 tornadoes as they recover from the disaster. LMA will have a representative at the Municipal Annex Building (6757 Old Springville Road) on Mondays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. beginning July 16. This assistance is made possible through an LMA program called RESTore.
RESTore (Alabama Recovery Enterprise for Survivors of Tornadoes) is a disaster case management program operated by Lutheran Ministries of Alabama. RESTore is designed to provide help, support and advocacy for survivors of the 2012 tornadoes. RESTore case managers work in partnership with tornado survivors to assess their disaster-related needs, develop long-term recovery plans, and connect survivors to available resources.

Practicing Progressive Christianity in the 21st Century
The Center for Progressive Renewal has announced "Praxis21: Practicing Progressive Christianity in the 21st Century" as the theme for the New Church Leadership Institute (NCLI) to be held August 8-10, 2012.
Created six years ago, NCLI features world-class church planting and renewal experts within the progressive church, and is one of the main programs of the Center for Progressive Renewal (CPR). The conference will be held at the Courtyard by Marriott Conference Center; 130 Clairmont Road, Decatur, GA 30030, and registration is now open.
Dozens of speakers will participate in NCLI, the only conference of its kind in the United States. Presenters will include Phyllis Tickle, Laurie Beth Jones, Eric Elnes, Ben Guess, Ken Samuel, Cameron Trimble and Michael Piazza.
Praxis21 will focus on six major themes including global trends that are reshaping what it means to be church in this time, how leaders can "retool" themselves to lead churches into a new age, and how to build sustainable ministries for the present and future. Modeled after the TED conference format, each session will be presented in plenary format with 4 to 5 speakers, presenting their best ideas in short, 18 minute segments.
Here is the great news: event sponsors have been very generous, and 40 seats are available for FREE. Leaders can register for free by using the code "praxisvip". It waives the $549 conference fee. Seminary students who wish to attend may also attend for no cost by using the code "CTS".

Electric Transmission Line Running Through Camp Lutherock
As reported in an earlier issue of the E-news, in late May 2012, staff of LLMI learned that Mountain Electric Cooperative (electric utility) was planning to run an electric transmission line from the Banner Elk Substation to establish a new substation for the town of Sugar Mountain. One of the potential routes enters Camp Lutherock in the saddle area, passes near the Alpine Climbing Tour and goes down the valley to the north until it leaves the Camp Lutherock property.
Keith Johnson, Executive Director of Lutheridge, Lutherock, Lutheranch and Luther Springs, reports, "We're in the home stretch of our battle to keep the electric transmission line from running through Camp Lutherock."
Your assistance is needed--send a letter to the Mountain Electric Board of Directors requesting they select a route that does not run through Camp Lutherock or the Lutherock Natural Area (sample letter here).
It is important that the letters are sent before August 2012, as the Mountain Electric board will make a decision at a date still to be determined in August. Please send a copy of one of the letters indicating that you have taken this step to Margo Rabon, 28 Spruce Drive, Arden, NC 28704, mrabon@llmi.org. Thank you for your partnership in helping to maintain the remote wilderness nature of Camp Lutherock. |
