ELCA Youth Gathering

by Rachel Alley

Southeastern Synod Assistant to the Bishop

for Young Adult and Youth Ministries

In less than two weeks, over 34,000 youth and adults will gather in New Orleans for the ELCA Youth Gathering.  From our Southeastern Synod, 418 youth and adults registered.

The planning for this event is different than many past Gatherings.  Because of staffing cuts in the ELCA, the majority of this Gathering has been planned and is being implemented by ELCA volunteers across the nation. These volunteers care about the ELCA but, more importantly, care about youth ministry in our church.

The youth will arrive on Wednesday, July 18. Can you imagine that many kids checking into hotels and getting ready for the first mass Gathering in the Super Dome that evening?  For many youth who come from small congregations, seeing 34,000 other Lutherans singing and praising God will be pretty astounding!

Read the rest on the synod blog.

Live Streaming at the Youth Gathering!

The Youth Gathering evening program will be streamed each night, July 18-21, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Central Time, and worship on Sunday, July 22, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Central time. The stream will take place on www.elca.org/gathering.

Funding Requests Now Being Accepted

Deadline: October 15

The Southeastern Synod's Budget and Finance Committee is now accepting proposals for funding in the 2014-15 Ministry Funding Plan. Agencies, institutions and other groups who wish to request synodical funding are invited to submit their requests online, using the following link: 2014-15 Funding Request

calculatorFunding for committees and task forces is approved on a different cycle and requires a different form. The most recent Synod Assembly approved lump sum funding for committees and task forces during the 2013-14 fiscal year. The Synod Council will allocate the approved total among the different groups, based on recommendations from the Budget and Finance Committee. Committee and Task Force chairpersons should submit their funding requests for the 2013-14 fiscal year, using the online form located at: Committee/TF Funding for 2013-14.

The deadline for submission of funding requests is Monday, October 15, 2012. Anyone unable to submit a funding request electronically may obtain a paper copy of the necessary forms by contacting the Synod Office (404-589-1977).

Vote for Lutheran Services In Tennessee August 17

Lutheran Services in Tennessee (LST) has been chosed as one of 500 finalists to receive a new Toyota vehicle in the "Toyota 100 Cars for Good" Program.  Each day for 100 days, online voters will choose which of five non-profits will take home a new set of wheels. The organization who receives the most votes at the end of the day takes home a brand new Toyota. LST has a 1 in 5 chance of receiving a new car!

Why do they need a car?

In the words from their application, "Lutheran Services in Tennessee would use the much needed vehicle in a number of ways to help individuals in need. Through Lutheran Disaster Response, a vehicle is needed to transport building materials and volunteer workers to construction sites for families affected by disasters. With a van, we would be able to transport women living in poverty to our Building Healthy Families program during poor weather conditions, as well as the elderly women that walking to our meeting site. We could also provide transportation to appointments to social service agencies providing much needed services. Also, we would make the vehicle available to the St. Paul's Lutheran Food Bank for food box deliveries to seniors in need of food. Each Sunday, we provide transportation to refugee families wishing to attend Sunday worship services in the Nashville area. Our current van is experiencing many breakdowns with large repair cost which jeopardizes all of our services."

All voters have to do is log in to their Facebook profile and use the "100 Cars for Good" app to vote on one of that day's five nonprofit organizations.
