Names and Places

by the Rev. Darrel Peterson
Assistant to the Bishop
Southeastern Synod

In the thirty-second chapter of Genesis, we read the account of how Jacob wrestled with God. At daybreak the struggle ends. Jacob is advised by his opponent that from that day, he will be known as Israel, "for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed." Jacob then called the place, Peniel, saying,"for I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved." Israel became the name of God's nation, with the names of the twelve sons of Israel (Jacob) becoming the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.

The Bible is full of names and places that are rooted in descriptive meanings...(read the rest on the synod blog.)

Ruach Conference Gathers with Mission Interpreters Theme

The Ruach Conference on the Gulf Coast is the first conference in the Southeastern Synod to host an overview and informational session to find out more about the newest ministry in the synod - Mission Interpretation.

The Ruach Conference Synod Council Representative, Pastor Michael Huntley, invited the synod's new Mission Interpreter coordinator, Michael Krekling, to visit during a recent conference meeting and share information about this ministry.

Mike let the conference know the ELCA's Mission Interpreter ministry began in 1997 and has been steadily moving across the 65 synods of the ELCA. Mission Interpretation is telling the story of how God works in your personal life, in the lives of those in your congregation, in your synod and in churchwide ministries across the country and throughout the world.

There is also a strong component about our stewardship of God's resources working to fund ministries. These stories show all of us working together to be "little Jesuses" not only to our communities, but to those miles away in ministries such as the Malaria Initiative in Africa or providing outhouses in Guatemala.  Sharing your story with others enables them to hear God at work and connects them to your faith journey, that of your congregation and of the entire church. It allows others to see faith in action as God's children work together for the glory of God.

Our synod's goal is to have at least one Mission Interpreter in each congregation and Mission Interpreter Coordinators in all nine conferences across the synod. Interested in hearing more about how to become a Mission Interpreter?  Contact Michael Krekling, Southeastern Synod Mission Interpreter coordinator at krekling@windstream.net or 770-503-5050.

May 5 Celebration at Faith Lutheran Church, Knoxville, TN

All Are Invited!

The congregation of Faith Lutheran Church in Knoxville, TN celebrated this Easter in a new, larger sanctuary, having successfully acquired the land and buildings of New Light Presbyterian Church on Jamestowne Boulevard adjacent to their current Farragut campus.

"We were happy to celebrate Easter with one worship service," said the Rev. Bob Stelter. The congregation had grown much larger than the sanctuary could accommodate in one service so the church had been offering two traditional services in the sanctuary on Sunday mornings and a contemporary service in the church gym.

The purchase came about as the result of a Capital Campaign called "Creating Holy Space" launched by the congregation in 2011. The intended purpose of the campaign was to build a new sanctuary on the nearly 6-acre corner lot the church occupies. But that goal changed when the adjacent property was made available.

With the acquisition, Faith Lutheran Church now owns over 11 acres on the corner of Campbell Station Road and Jamestown Boulevard. The buildings on the two properties give the church over 61,000  square feet of space. The newly acquired sanctuary and church building were built in 1978 by St. John Neumann Church. St. John Neumann sold the property in 2005 to Northshore Presbyterian Church.

In addition to the newly acquired property, Faith Lutheran has maintained a campus in Loudon County since 2006. The Rev. Chris Hansen provides services at the Lake Campus located in Tellico Village.

On May 5 at 5:00 p.m. Bishop Julian Gordy will consecrate the new sanctuary. All are welcome to attend and celebrate this joyous occasion.
