Yearning to be more | |
by the Rev. Laurie Williams
St. James, Brunswick, GA
Dear friends,
Oprah Winfrey interviewed Viola Davis after her Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the maid Aibileen Clark in The Help. It was a poignant conversation between two women who have achieved success beyond anything they could have imagined as children, when personal and professional opportunities were severely limited for African Americans.

Fishers of Men at Lutherock
Come to the mountains to enjoy life serenity of fly fishing April 13-15, 2012 (Friday-Sunday)
This men's retreat at Lutherock offers an opportunity to be in a place where God can teach us a lot about ourselves and faith through the mountain waters. There is time for learning knots, entomology, and for casting practice before heading out together to the rivers on Saturday and Sunday morning. Through devotions and worship we will prepare for a time of reflection and prayer; enhancing the fishing experience beyond just catching and releasing. A North Carolina fishing license is required and can be purchased online at www.ncwildlife.org. There will be a limited amount of basic gear available to rent.
Cost for Fishers of Men:$199 per person (Includes Friday dinner through Sunday lunch, housing in Moretz Cabin and Crow's Nest and program costs)
Visit www.llmi.net for more information or to register on-line.

Christian Churches Together
Christian Churches Together, an ecumenical organization made up of representatives of the Catholic, African American, Historic Protestant, Evangelical, Pentecostal and Orthodox churches in the USA, held its annual meeting in Memphis in February. Bishop Gordy was among 85 national church leaders who participated in the event. The church leaders visited the National Civil Rights Museum (site of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's martyrdom), Slave Haven Museum (an Underground Railroad safe house), and the historic Mason Temple where Dr. King delivered his "Mountain Top" speech.
The representatives heard from Bishop Claire Burkat (ELCA), Dr. Bernard LaFayette (co-founder of SNCC and Freedom Rider), Dr. Albert Raboteau (Princeton), Dr. Virgil Wood (Virginia organizer for the Washington March), Dr. Jeff Farmer (Open Bible Churches), David Beckmann (Bread for the World), Dr. J. Herbert Nelson (PCUSA); Dr. Frank Thomas (Disciples), and many others as we, men and women of many colors and ethnicities, sought togehter to better understand and more effectively organize to combat racism and poverty in America. The group, which operates by consensus, issued a statement on poverty and racism. You can read it here.

Members of LCR on mission trip to Guatemala | Eight members of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection (LRC), Marietta, Georgia, recently travelled to Guatemala to ask the members of the Iglesia Luterana Agustina de Guatemela (ILAG) if they could serve them. The theme of the mission trip was ¿Puedo Ayudarles?, which, of course means: "May I help you?"
During ILAG's Leaders Conference, they provided meals, made beds, and cleaned up for the pastors and members of the conference. They also spent several days building benches and repairing, sanding and painting all the existing benches and tables at the Lutheran Center in Guatemala City. In total, they provided almost 500 hours of volunteer service to the members of our companion synod.

Bible study at
the Leaders Conference |
For a well deserved treat, they spent two wonderful nights in Panajachel on the shores of Lake Atitlán. During their time there, they took part in a cultural boat tour of the lake and the surrounding villages and visited the Eagles' Nest, an orphanage located in a spectacular setting, two thousand above the lake, in sight of five active volcanoes.
More opportunities to help are being planned. If you or your congregation are interested in a mission trip to Guatemala, contact Pastor Bob Bear at(770) 427-0325 or kbbear@comcast.net. |
WOW Urban Ministry | |

Looking for a quality summer camp for your youth? Maybe something inexpensive? Why not combine the two and spend a week in downtown Knoxville, TN with WOW Urban Ministry! WOW is a weeklong experience of faith formation, leadership development, and urban mission. We strive to empower youth and open their eyes to the kinds of service they could be doing within their own communities.
Why is WOW so special? WOW is a camp created, designed and led BY teenagers FOR teenagers. Yes, there are adults around, but the majority of the leadership comes from well-trained youth. This helps connections and relationships form, because our leading youth will be working right beside your youth!
The entire cost for the week (meals, t-shirt included) is $235, including the nonrefundable deposit of $35.
We have full weeks already, but here are the dates of our open weeks:
June 3-8
