Being Church in Communities
by the Rev. Darrel Peterson
Assistant to the Bishop, ELCA-Southeastern Synod

Several years ago I came to appreciate the plural perspective of community, that being, communities. We quickly recognize that we live in a community. But, we also live in multiple communities. We may live in a subdivision, a community. We may live in the community of those who support a university football team. We may find ourselves in a community of families who have a student playing in a high school band. And then there are daunting communities such as the American citizenry or the community of humanity. We quickly realize how many communities there are in which we live and function.

CommunityToday, I invite us to reflect on our church communities. Our ELCA has schooled us in talking about the three expressions of our church: congregation, synod and churchwide.

ELCA members respond to record-level rainfall in Central America

from the ELCA News Service

CHICAGO (ELCA) - Members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) are responding to record-level rainfall in Central America that has caused flooding and mudslides in rural and urban areas. Through ELCA Disaster Response, $23,000 has been allocated for Lutheran companion churches in Guatemala and Nicaragua to address immediate humanitarian needs. The ELCA is also working with Lutheran companion churches and local partners in El Salvador and Honduras, as damage assessments
continue across the entire region.

El SalvadoreA tropical storm depression that began Oct. 10 produced heavy rainfall, primarily along the Pacific Coast of Central America. More than 90 people have died and hundreds of thousands of people are displaced from their homes and living in emergency shelters.

The rains have also affected the current harvest season. It is expected that the loss of crops will yield a shortage of seeds for the 2012 planting season.

ELCA churchwide and synod staff and ELCA missionary personnel, along with colleagues from Lutheran companion churches across Central America, The Lutheran World Federation and ACT Alliance (Action by Churches Together) are working together to share information, assess needs and garner resources to support disaster response efforts.

Why Does My Congregation Need a Mutual Ministry Committee?

The Rev. Dr. Paul Baumgartner, member of the synod Mutual Ministry Committee and Senior Pastor at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Woodstock, GA provides some answers.

Your congregation's constitution probably requires it. Look up paragraph C13.04 in your constitution. A provision for Mutual Ministry Committees is included in the ELCA Model Constitution for Congregations so it is very likely you will find it in yours. In some cases the paragraph may assign the duties of a Mutual Ministry Committee to another group such as an Executive Committee but the duties are still expected. Abiding by the congregation's constitution is always proper order.

Your congregation's insurance carrier probably requires or recommends it. Congregations with a functioning Mutual Ministry Committee have a lower incidence rate of misconduct by rostered leaders. Following the recommendations of your insurance company is critical in protecting your congregation and its assets.

A Mutual Ministry Committee supports and nurtures a healthy relationship between rostered staff and congregational members. It does so by:  1) encouraging and holding the rostered staff accountable for the care of their spiritual, emotional and physical well-being; 2) working with rostered staff to plan and hold them accountable for continuing education that is based on the needs of the congregation as well as the professional development needs of the individual; 3) providing a forum of mutuality and trust in which rostered leaders can reflect on the work of the congregation and their role in providing leadership and direction. [2012 Southeastern Synod Compensation Guidelines]

Most congregations that don't have a Mutual Ministry Committee have allowed their rostered staff to make that decision. If that is the case in your congregation you should ask why. When Mutual Ministry Committees are about support, nurture and health; and when the ELCA and ELCA-Southeastern Synod and insurance companies recommend functioning Mutual Ministry Committees, there is really no good reason not to have one.

Dean Ferguson will speak of these agreements as a base from which our ecumenical dialogues can continue to bear fruit in the years to come.

Sleepless in Seattle - - oops - - the Southeast

by Connie Pearson--Chair, Southeastern Synod Health Ministries Task Force

Drowsy Driving Prevention Week is November 6-12

DriverHave you ever been so sleepy when you were driving that you tried to keep yourself awake by turning up the volume on the radio or rolling down the windows to let the breezes blow on your face? According to the National Sleep Foundation surveys, half of all American adults consistently report that they have driven drowsy and approximately 20% admit that they have actually fallen asleep at the wheel in the previous year.

Are you aware of the fact that drowsiness impairs judgment, performance and reaction time behind the wheel just like alcohol and drugs? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conservatively estimates that 100,000 police-reported crashes each year are caused primarily by drowsy driving and that such crashes result in 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries and a monetary loss of at least $12.5 billion.

Anyone who drives is at risk of falling asleep behind the wheel. Those at the greatest risk include young drivers, especially males between the ages of 16 - 25, shift workers and people working long hours, commercial drivers, people with untreated sleep disorders and business travelers.   Signs that you may be at risk of falling asleep behind the wheel include:

  • Trouble keeping your eyes open or your head up
  • Yawning or rubbing your eyes repeatedly
  • Daydreaming or wandering thoughts
  • Drifting from lane to lane, tailgating or missing signs and exits
  • Feeling restless, irritable or aggressive
  • Turning up the radio or rolling down the window
  • Having a slower reaction time when confronted with traffic

Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, sponsored by the National Sleep Foundation, is November 6 - 12. To avoid causing a drowsy driving crash this and every week, practice the following:

  • Get adequate sleep on a regular basis and practice good sleep habits
  • Seek treatment if you have a sleep problem
  • Don't drink even a small amount of alcohol then drive
  • Get off the road if you notice warning signs of being sleepy
  • Try consuming caffeine if you need something to perk you up - the equivalent of 2 cups of coffee can increase alertness for several hours
  • Drive with a friend - you can take turns driving
  • When driving long distance, get off the road at least every two hours for a rest break, to switch drivers or if necessary, to take a short nap
  • Always wear your seatbelt - there is no excuse for not wearing a seatbelt - you may save your life and the life of another!

Disaster Preparedness Event held in Knoxville, TN

On Tuesday, September 20, 2011, a Community Disaster Preparedness Event organized by Dick Hess, member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Knoxville and synod Volunteer Disaster Response Coordinator, was held at a local restaurant, Buddy's Bar-B-Q. Thirty-eight participants from the local Lutheran churches as well as community folks attended. Each participant received a canvas bag with preparedness items from the American Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a small weather radio and a Lutheran Disaster trifold. Congregational members completed an individual asset mapping form which Hess will use with congregations working on their preparedness plans.

Disaster Prep

The event was supported by the local Thrivent chapter. Thrivent gave away two battery/hand crank emergency radios as door prizes. Jon Biggs, serving with Lutheran Services in Tennessee/Lutheran Disaster Response, and a Knoxville Red Cross chapter representative each gave a disaster preparedness presentation.

(Tea) Party Time

Tea Party

The women of St. Stephen Evangelical Lutheran Church in Decatur, GA held their third Annual Tea Party on Saturday, October 22. This major fundraising event of the year turns the proceeds over to the general operating funds of the church. In a small, primarily immigrant parish, fundraising is important to the economy of the church but the challenge is to make it fun and cross-generational.

Dancer

Pastor Helen Hollingsworth said, "The ladies of St. Stephen love the tea because it is part of our cultural heritage; we enjoy dressing up, and especially picking just the right crown (hat) to top it off. The young adults serve as hosts and entertain with singing and liturgical dance. It brings families and friends together who may not be a part of our congregation, but for one afternoon gather to share a meal together."

Laughter and hugs abounded, as well as a few well-deserved "oohs" and "aahs" as the hat parade took center stage! Pastor Helen remarked, "It is a time to reclaim part of our longstanding tradition of tea in the afternoon and a chance for the young people to be cognizant of their social heritage." Bon Appetit!

Chartering of Celebration of Grace, Canton, GA

On Sunday, October 23, Celebration of Grace in Canton, GA opened its charter and invited regular attendees and participants to commit themselves to the work of the new mission by, among other things, signing the charter. There were about 50-60 people present with about half that number signing the charter. Dr. Everett Flaningan, Director for Evangelical Mission and Assistant to the Bishop in the Southeastern Synod, had the opportunity to preach and bring greetings on behalf of the synod, Bishop Gordy and the ELCA.  Members and friends of Celebration of Grace were reminded that 4.5 million Lutherans were walking with them and cheering them on.
