AFFIRM - Vision for the Future
by Rachel Alley
Southeastern Synod Director for Youth Ministries

This coming weekend the Affirm Leadership will meet to celebrate Affirm 2011 and Vision for 2012 and future years. We've asked Pastor Paul Frank, a long time friend of Affirm, to join us and lead us in this visioning process, but first we have to celebrate!
We had 288 youth from all across the Southeastern Synod join us for AFFIRM on the Berry College campus in Rome, Georgia. The week was filled with Bible study, worship, fun and games, as well as discipleship and leadership training...

Diane Jacobson returns to Southeastern Synod
If you attended the Southeastern Synod Leadership Convocation three years ago, you remember what an inspiring and engaging speaker Diane Jacobson was. Dr. Jacobson, the director of the ELCA's Book of Faith Initiative, led us in Bible studies and told us about the purpose and goals of the Initiative.
Here's good news: Dr. Jacobson is returning to our synod later this year to lead us in conversations about Scripture. She will lead Bible study workshops at Shepherd of the Hills in Birmingham, AL on Saturday, December 3, and Good Shepherd in Woodstock, GA, on Sunday afternoon, December 4.
Be sure to mark your calendars now. Pastors, lay leaders, and all congregation members are invited and encouraged to attend these events.

Coming Your Way -- Hunger, Poverty and Justice Task Force Survey
The recently formed Southeastern Synod Task Force on Hunger, Poverty and Justice issues is looking for your assistance and input as it begins its work. Specifically, they are hoping to identify any ongoing efforts by the member congregations to address the issues of hunger, poverty and justice in communities around the synod and to find areas where congregations would like to be more involved or would like to receive more information.
The data will be used immediately to coordinate efforts among congregations, committees and task forces in addressing these issues. The areas in which congregations wish to be more involved/receive more information will be used to identify and ideally distribute resources about that area. This could be in the form of websites, books, materials for small group studies, speakers or organizations near your community who can assist you.
The goal of the task force is to have each synod congregation represented in the results. Please watch your email inbox for this important survey and take it before the October 7 deadline.

Synod Funding Requests: Deadline September 30
The Southeastern Synod's Budget and Finance Committee is now accepting proposals for funding in the 2013-14 Ministry Funding Plan. Agencies, institutions and other groups who wish to request synodical funding are invited to submit their requests online, using the following link: 2013-14 Funding Request.
Funding for committees and task forces is approved on a different cycle and requires a different form. The most recent Synod Assembly approved lump sum funding for committees and task forces during the 2012-13 fiscal year. The Synod Council will allocate the approved total among the different groups, based on recommendations from the Budget and Finance Committee. Committee and task force chairpersons should submit their funding requests for the 2012-13 fiscal year, using the online form located at: Committee/TF Funding for 2012-13.
The deadline for submission of funding requests is Friday, September 30, 2011. Anyone unable to submit a funding request electronically may obtain a paper copy of the necessary forms by contacting the Synod Office (404-589-1977).

Immigration Task Force |
|
By way of brief introduction, I am Kent Lewis, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Shelbyville, TN. Some of you may remember me presenting the documentary, Welcome to Shelbyville at last year's Leadership Convocation.
How we welcome and incorporate others, and allow others to transform who we become is a major task facing us as Church and as a nation. I ask you to prayerfully consider joining the Immigration Task Force, or to prayerfully recommend others who would like to serve. I expect the Task Force will define itself; for me, it would be marked by few meetings, each of which would be long on sharing pragmatic ideas, networking and striving not to re-invent the wheel!
What kind of issues do we explore? Here's an example: This past week I was invited to be on a panel, which represented a receiving community.The meeting was inspired by and modified South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation groups. The three-hour community gathering attracted about 75 from the Hispanic immigrant community who spoke of discrimination experiences. The power of being heard and of finding their voice, was a most powerful and valuable experience. There are great possibilities in such gatherings for any risk-takers out there.
If you would be willing to join, even for just a brief time, you're welcome. At this time, short-term commitments are certainly understood. Please contact me at the information given below or complete the form here.

2011 Calling Congregations Conference in Atlanta

The 2011 Calling Congregations Conference, hosted by The Fund for Theological Education, is taking place in Atlanta, October 6-8. This event aims to help clergy and laypeople develop a process for nurturing the next generation of transformative church leaders. Registration fees range from $150 to $200 per person. A full house is expected, so claim your spot now.
Featured guest speakers are Dr. Parker J. Palmer and the Rev. Eustacia Moffett Marshall. Instead of traditional panels, keynotes and breakout sessions, participants will work in small groups facilitated by Palmer and Marshall. The groups will:
- Assess emerging social behaviors that affect church transformation;
- Discern their individual roles in developing future church leaders;
- Brainstorm and design approaches to move the church forward.
Representing a variety of denominations, ethnicities and races, generations, and geographies, conference participants may be ordained clergy, laypeople in leadership roles, or anyone else with a stake in the future of church leadership.
Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) Invites Congregations to Host DREAM Act Sabbath
This fall, you are invited to hold a DREAM Act Sabbath, an intentional time to lift up the stories of undocumented youth who want to attend college, work and further contribute to the United States. Join LIRS, a diverse coalition of religious groups, and DREAM Act champion Senator Durbin (D-IL) in a campaign to dedicate time for education, reflection, and action.
Your leadership can make all the difference! Visit the LIRS DREAM Act Sabbath webpage for resources on how to plan your DREAM Sabbath! There you'll find:
- sample invitation letters
- stories of DREAM Act students
- Scripture suggestions to guide your planning
Stand for the welcome of these promising young people by hosting a DREAM Sabbath this fall.
