Do We Love to Tell the Story?

by the Rev. Darrel Peterson, Assistant to the Bishop

ELCA-Southeastern Synod

Recently, a pastoral candidate reported to me that in his interview with a call committee, the committee members were totally unaware that our ELCA was about to have a Churchwide Assembly. Last Sunday where I worshipped, the prayers were well done, using our denominational resource. But there was no mention of the folks in the Northeastern states who were at that moment, being impacted by tropical storm, Irene. The worship "tagline," "Go in peace, serve the Lord" was traditional. Some Sundays, it would be great to hear, "Go in peace, remember the poor." We need to remember the poor! We need to be engaged with the issues of our Church and our world!

Let's Make Malaria History!

Malaria

At the 2011 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, Voting Members overwhelmingly approved the ELCA

Malaria Campaign.  Working as a church, through churches in Africa, the structure is already in place to reach individuals and communities that other organizations cannot. Health care providers are trained to save lives. As Bishop Joseph Bvumbe of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Malawi said, "We can't do it on our own here. The ELCA must always be part of this fight, and we need [your] support in order to succeed."

What's next?

You. You are the next step in ending deaths from malaria. We -- together -- are the ELCA Malaria Campaign. We need your help.

Please spread the word. Tell your friends and family. Get your congregation and synod involved. And please give generously to support this important work. Your donations to the ELCA Malaria Campaign will help provide mosquito nets, health care, education and more to help those most in need.

Your gifts, your prayers and your leadership make this important work possible.

Blessings as we continue this work together,

The Rev. Andrea DeGroot-Nesdahl
Coordinator, ELCA Malaria Campaign

P.S. Find the resources you need to help you share the news with your congregation and synod at www.elca.org/malaria. We have new brochures, offering envelopes, videos and more, ready for you to download or order.

JacobsonDiane Jacobson returns to Southeastern Synod

If you attended the Synod Professional Leaders' Convocation three years ago, you remember what an inspiring and engaging speaker Diane Jacobson was. Dr. Jacobson, the director of the ELCA's Book of Faith Initiative, led us in Bible studies and told us about the purpose and goals of the Initiative.

Here's good news: Dr. Jacobson is returning to our synod later this year to lead us in conversations about Scripture. She will lead Bible study workshops at Shepherd of the Hills in Birmingham on Saturday, December 3, and Good Shepherd in Woodstock, GA, on Sunday afternoon, December 4.

More information about Dr. Jacobson's presentations will be announced later, but be sure to mark your calendars now. Pastors, lay leaders, and all congregation members are invited and encouraged to attend these events.

Feeding Those in Need

veggiesPartnering with 2nd Harvest Food Bank, located at St. Philip Episcopal Church in Donelson, St. John's Lutheran in Nashville, TN planted a Community Garden this year to help provide food for those in need in the community.  The small garden provided an abundant amount of tomatoes, green beans, okra, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, and a variety of peppers.

Every week, members take bags and boxes filled from God's abundant harvest to a nearby 2nd Harvest Food Bank location.  With the success this year, they plan to greatly expand the garden next year.

September 11 Memorial Service

An Invitation from St. Paul Lutheran in Maryville, TN

St. Paul Lutheran Church of Maryville, TN (429 Sandy Springs Road, Maryville, TN 37803) is hosting a Memorial Service on September 11th.  Join us in prayer as we mark the tenth anniversary of the tragedy of 9-11-2001.  We do so by opening up our church to the wider community and offering time for prayer, hope, and healing. Various members of the clergy will be present and we encourage you to make time to be present at this service. All rostered persons are invited to vest and process. The color will be white.  If you have any questions, please call Pastor Kevin Strickland (865) 982-4285.  Wherever you are on this day, we pray together as one church:

The "Teardrop" Memorial

September 11, 2001
located in Bayonne, NJ

Let us pray,

For all those who lost their lives, those on the ground, as well as those in the planes and all their families who still live with the pain.  We pray for those who witnessed the planes as they hit, and those who sifted through the rubble.  We pray for all those whose lives have been affected by this event, and for peace, for the people of the United States, and the people of Afghanistan and Iraq.  We pray for better understanding between peoples, and increased Christian-Muslim relations.  We pray knowing you listen, we pray knowing you heal, and pray offering our confession.  Thank you for your forgiving and lavish grace.  We pray to you O Lord, our God, and our protector.  Amen.
