Trusting in the Promises
From the Rev. Darrel Peterson
Assistant to the Bishop
Southeastern Synod
Every day there is a list of deaths and obituaries. There is not a special season when deaths occur. Like breathing in and breathing out, deaths happen. The deaths of the elderly bring sadness, but are often expected. There are the sudden, shocking deaths, where an active vital person is suddenly gone. There are the gradual deaths following extended illnesses. A common denominator is that we all will experience inevitable death sometime in the future. We are all terminal.

Report from Southeast Servants
So what did you do this summer? Sixteen youth from the Southeastern Synod can say they went to Lutheridge and made a difference that will impact generations to come!
June 5-11, these youth attended a new Lutheridge Camp offering called "Southeast Servants" just for high school students. Rachel Alley, Director of Youth Ministries for the ELCA Southeastern Synod was the CARE leader for the group who spent time each day studying the Bible, journaling, and talking about "serving like Jesus." Monday's theme was "to be servants," and campers began their service projects of landscaping and deck building. By late Monday morning, hammering and sawing could be heard all over Lutheridge! On Tuesday, the theme for the day was "Jesus calls us ... to work together as a team." Campers learned how God gives spiritual gifts at baptism, how to recognize gifts in each other and that the whole body (the team) runs smoother when those different God-given gifts are used.
On Wednesday, the group discussed "Jesus calls us ... to be healers." Campers talked about all the hurt and pain in the world, and how they can make a difference at home and in the world. Band-Aids were worn as reminders of situations that were causing pain and needed to be healed. On Thursday, the theme for the day was "Jesus calls us ... to feed the poor." Campers learned that over 1.4 billion people in the world live on less than $1.25 each day and 8,000 children die each day of hunger-related causes. Scripture from Matthew 25:35 was a focal point of the day: "I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me."
On Friday, the focus was "going home." Campers discussed the Lost Son and the welcome and party he got from his father and family when he finally made his way home. There was discussion around the many who are away from home for reasons like family disputes, drugs and alcohol, bad decisions, etc, and that we need to be like the father in the story and welcome them home. On Friday afternoon, the last of the landscaping was completed and the final nails were hammered into the deck!
Rachel Alley says, "For years to come, kids will come to Lutheridge and see what we did. They'll be able to walk on a path without tripping on a root, or hang their towels to dry on the decks. We knew that we had worked hard, learned a lot, and had a blast being together! And it's fun serving like Jesus and being a Southeast Servant!"

Book of Faith Brief | |

"Select Learning" ( http://www.selectlearning.org) has been featured in this space before, for a good reason: It's a great source of Lutheran-produced multimedia resources for biblical and theological studies. Its web site describes Select Learning as "a life-long learning partner of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America." One course available from Select Learning is " How Lutherans Interpret the Bible," a DVD with seven presentations by Mark Allan Powell. (Dr. Powell, a professor at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, led several well-received Bible studies on discipleship and stewardship at our synod assembly a few years ago.) It includes a study guide and additional material, and can be used in a variety of educational and devotional situations and time formats.
Among other selections are studies of Matthew, Luke, Romans, Isaiah, Galatians, and Revelation; "Preaching the Old Testament;" "What Are They Doing to Jesus?" (also by Mark Allan Powell); and " Encountering God in Scripture," a collection of 5- and 15-minute presentations by ten ELCA seminary professors about ways of reading and understanding the Bible as an encounter with the living God.
Any of these courses could enrich your personal Bible study or your congregation's education program.

Songs of Justice and Peace CD and Devotions
The Lutheran Deaconess Association (LDA), a center for diaconal service and learning at Valparaiso University, announces free devotional aids to accompany the recently released recording of "Songs of Justice and Peace." Christians working in ministries of hunger and justice will find this a helpful aid for use with adult Bible study groups, committee meetings, and mission trips. These aids can be found at http://thelda.org/resources. "Songs of Justice and Peace" is the latest recording in a series by the Lutheran Deaconess Choir. The recording was made possible by a Community Foundation Grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. The Lutheran Deaconess Conference is gathering for its Annual Meeting, July 14-17 in Oklahoma City, OK.

Are You an Emotionally Intelligent Leader?
Emotional Intelligence and Human Relations Skills Workshops
The Core EQ-HR Center workshop is an intensive 5-day session designed to enable participants to learn about, build, and practice emotional intelligence skills in a small group setting. Skilled facilitators provide tools and feedback to enable participants to learn about themselves and to immediately practice emerging skills. As part of this core event, workshop participants complete a comprehensive self-assessment of their emotional intelligence. Participants receive a detailed, confidential report of their own Emotional Intelligence strengths and development needs. The content of the workshop revolves around the areas of emotional intelligence defined in the EQ reports, and these individual reports will provide items to be explored in one's small group. Emotional Intelligence is the key to improving leadership effectiveness for faith-based leaders.
