Patriotism and Faith

From the Rev. Darrel Peterson

Assistant to the Bishop

Southeastern Synod

FlagSummer is here and flags were everywhere!  Who doesn't enjoy the American 4th of July experience?  We relish the parades, the fireworks, the cookouts, the sporting events, the concerts, the neighborhood gatherings and the time off.  With Monday being the Fourth this year, churches were afforded the opportunity to provide a complementary prelude to the festivities.  The congregation where I worshipped on Sunday did so, very well.  There was a good and faithful treatment of the Christian faith and the patriotic.

ELCA World Hunger Nutrition Program

 World Hunger

Do you know of a congregation that is engaged in any of the following?

  • Summer food service program site
  • After-school program that provides healthy snacks
  • Community garden
  • Lunches at Vacation Bible School programs
  • Backpack Ministry

The Washington DC office of ELCA World Hunger is working on protecting federal funding for nutrition programs, especially those that impact children. They're looking for some stories that illustrate the need and how Lutherans are helping to fill it. If your congregation or one you know is involved in any of these types of programs, please contact  Nancy.Michaelis@elca.org (800-638-3522 ext.2713) or Jodi.Slattery@elca.org (202-626-7947.)

Thanks!

Funding Requests Now Being Accepted

Deadline: September 30

The Southeastern Synod's Budget and Finance Committee is now accepting proposals for funding in the 2013-14 Ministry Funding Plan. Agencies, institutions and other groups who wish to request synodical funding are invited to submit their requests online, using the following link: 2013-14 Funding Request

calculatorFunding for committees and task forces is approved on a different cycle and requires a different form. The most recent Synod Assembly approved lump sum funding for committees and task forces during the 2012-13 fiscal year. The Synod Council will allocate the approved total among the different groups, based on recommendations from the Budget and Finance Committee. Committee and Task Force chairpersons should submit their funding requests for the 2012-13 fiscal year, using the online form located at:  Committee/TF Funding for 2012-13.

The deadline for submission of funding requests is Friday, September 30, 2011. Anyone unable to submit a funding request electronically may obtain a paper copy of the necessary forms by contacting the Synod Office (404-589-1977).

Have you visited the ELCA's Bible page lately?  Take a look!  From here, you can
  • subscribe to a daily online Bible reading from the ELCA
  • make a link to a daily Bible reading for your congregation's website
  • get ideas for Bible studies by topic
  • and see resources to support Biblical education with children and youth.
While you are there, sign-up to participate in Prayer Ventures and to receive Faith Lens, a weekly lectionary Bible study that digs into current events and is designed for youth and young adults.  (Note: Faith Lens is not published during the school year but will resume with a study for September 11, 2011.)

Candidacy Timelines

Interested in Candidacy for you or someone you know?   Now's the time to contact the synod office.

CandidacyMany synods (including ours) now work toward a "relationship" with the candidate for about a year before an Entrance decision is given and a "Meet and Greet" with the candidacy committee is required before that decision.  This means that since the committee gathers only three times a year, prospective candidates need to think ahead.  Yes, it's true that a seminary may let you start classes before meeting with the candidacy committee, but it is not preferable and often tends to not only complicate things, but sometimes add as much as a year onto the process!

With that in mind, here are some important dates:

Future Candidacy Interview Dates

November 10-12, 2011 (deadline for all materials: October 1, 2011)

April 12-14, 2012 (deadline for all materials: March 1, 2012)

August 16-18, 2012 (deadline for all materials: July 1, 2012)

November 8-10, 2012 (deadline for all materials: October 1, 2012)

So, candidates, talk with your pastor and then contact Associate in Ministry Jeanette Burgess in the Synod Office (404-589-1977, ext. 232) to begin your process.

Caregiver's Sabbath

Caregiver's Sabbath

July 29-31

Fee: None

Long-term, disaster-response caregivers are invited to a guided retreat designed to provide physical/mental rest, spiritual renewal, peer fellowship, and quiet time in a wooded environment. This is a wonderful opportunity for long-term recovery workers - pastoral caregivers, case managers, volunteer coordinators and others directly involved in long-term response. For more information, contact Pastor Deborah Halter, Coordinator for Pastoral Care, at 404-580-5703.

Cookbook Deadline Revised

cookbookELCMA (The Evangelical Coalition for Mission in Appalachia) is embarking on a project to capture recipes and stories of the Appalachian region.  The previous deadline for submissions has been extended, and is now August 31, 2011.

We all have favorite foods that remind us of our childhood or special occasions and there is always a story:  a story of where we learned the recipe; of a particularly memorable celebration; or maybe even of the time that you left a vital ingredient out.

I
f you have a recipe you'd like to share, please submit it online to the ELCMA Cookbook and Appalachian Heritage Project   or right click this link and choose Open for a paper form.

I
f you have photos that show Appalachian heritage, those are welcome as well.  Please forward digital photo files (.jpg preferred) to volunteer@elcma.org.
