Mature Christian Youth
by Rachel Alley, Synod Director for Youth Ministries
I love the hustle and bustle of Synod Assembly. I love the worship, meeting new friends and pastors as well as getting to visit with dear old friends. I especially anticipate working with the SESLYO Board. SESLYO is the acronym for Southeastern Synod Lutheran Youth Organization. The Board is made up of youth representatives from each Conference along with others elected to be chair, chair elect, chaplain, secretary, multicultural, communications, definitely-abled, and the synod council representative and of course awesome adult advisors.

The Rev. Lanny Westphal, Director for Global Formation-Relationships, at the ELCA-Churchwide office in Chicago, is coming to Atlanta to officially open the Southeastern Synod's Glocal Mission Gathering on August 4, 2011 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Norcross, GA.
Pastor Westphal 's primary role at Churchwide is leading the Companion Synod program, but he is also knowledgable about stewardship and mission interpretation. Pastor Westphal will remain in Atlanta until Monday, August 8th and is available to preach, lead an adult forum, or address a congregation or congregations in the metro Atlanta area on Sunday, August 7th.
Congregations are encouraged to think of creative ways to come together to make sure that as many people can hear from Pastor Westphal as possible. Book of Faith Brief

This spring Luther Seminary hosted its second Book of Faith Jubilee. This year's Jubilee was called Inspiring Everyday People to Engage the Bible. The event attracted many people from around the ELCA who have a role in engaging people in studying and reading Scripture - from lay people to pastors to scholars and faculty to lay rostered leaders.
The event included four keynote speakers, many workshop opportunities, worship, and time for networking with others. The keynote speeches have now been posted online and can be viewed via podcast at this link - http://lsem.us/IYtR6.
Keynote speakers included: Nadia Bolz-Weber, founding pastor of House for All Sinners and Saints, an ELCA mission church in Denver, Colorado; Jessicah Duckworth, associate professor of Christian formation and teaching at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. and soon-to-be faculty at Luther Seminary; Craig Koester, professor of New Testament at Luther Seminary, and ; John Roberto, president and founder of LifelongFaith Associates, an organization dedicated to nurturing faith growth for all ages and generations in the parish and at home. Each speaker brought his or her unique perspective to the ongoing conversation about faith formation and biblical fluency. These podcasts would be great for lay and rostered congregational leaders, Bible study leaders, and faith formation/Christian education leaders, or anyone with a passion for engaging people in both the Bible and the life of the church.
Blessings,
