A pastoral letter from ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson
We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed but not driven to despair; persecuted but not forsaken; struck down but not destroyed (2 Corinthians 4:8-9).
June 2, 2011
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Our hearts have been breaking for weeks as we have watched incessant storms devastate many parts of the United States. From the plains of North Dakota to the bayous of Louisiana, floodwaters and torrential rain have washed out communities and cropland. Destructive tornado strikes leveled homes for miles in cities and towns including Joplin, Mo., and Cullman, Ala. Two ELCA church buildings -- one in each state -- were destroyed.
The winds destroyed the building of Peace Lutheran Church in Joplin, but not the faith of its members. Last Sunday they gathered in the parking lot in the midst of debris and shattered hopes to worship in the strong name of the risen Christ.

ELCA FactChecker | |
In a time of rumor and misinformation, the ELCA churchwide organization continues to receive requests from ELCA members for accurate information they can use in conversation with friends and family. To address these requests, the ELCA FactChecker blog has been launched at www.elcafactchecker.com. You can find recent posts on Biblical authority, Trinitarian language and universal salvation. |
Synod Assembly Reflections
by the Rev. Darrel Peterson

As the bishop and the event planner take deep breaths, we can report that another ELCA Southeastern Synod assembly has concluded. The participants in this weekend event have scattered to their communities and congregations in our four-state synod. Reports of actions taken are being prepared and next steps are being anticipated.
So, what has been accomplished? Is the world and the church better for the event that has transpired? Have the attendees and the ministries benefited from our time together?
