The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)
announced April 11 that it has committed an additional $500,000 to three partners in Japan as part of the ELCA's continuing response to the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck the northern part of the country one month ago. Coupled with funds committed earlier, the ELCA has committed a total of $740,000 toward response to the disaster. Read more.

ELCA Disaster Response Sends Emergency Grant for Red River Flooding
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) through Lutheran Disaster Response, sent a $10,000 emergency grant to Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota for immediate response to the flooding along the Red River and its tributaries.
Lutheran Disaster Response is a collaborative ministry of the ELCA and The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
During the past weekend, the Red River crested at Fargo, N.D., and Moorhead, Minn., at 38.75 feet, about two feet short of the record level set in 2009, said the Rev. Kevin Massey, director, ELCA Domestic Disaster Response and Lutheran Disaster Response. Levees protected both cities from widespread flooding. Read more. |

Time is Running Out | |
Attention ELCA Board of Pensions Health Plan Members
The deadline to take the Board of Pensions health assessment is April 30, 2011. As of the end of March, the Southeastern Synod was less than half-way to reaching the BOP goal of 65% participation. Not only will you earn a $150 personal wellness account credit, your employer can earn a 2% discount on health contributions for all of 2011. If only 65% of ELCA-primary plan members and eligible spouses in the synod take the assesment, the Southeastern Synod could be eligible for a "wellness reward" of 1% of the estimated 2011 health contributions paid by eligible employers in the synod.

The Time to be the Church
by the Rev. Darrel Peterson Assistant to the Bishop in the Southeastern Synod
My brother sent me an email a few days ago informing me that the country church where we grew up has determined to disband on June 19 of this year. It wasn't really surprising. The filled church of our youth has become a small gathering of the remaining faithful. I'm not aware that there is any conflict and folks aren't trying to leave the denomination. But the part-time retired pastor has really retired and the heating system has given up the ghost. Area demographics tell the story. It's time. Norunga Lutheran Church was organized by Swedish immigrants in western Minnesota 140 years ago. Thanks be to God!

Book of Faith Brief | |

Would you like to become a better teacher of the Bible? Are there people in your congregation who would like to be trained to teach the Bible in your parish setting?
Here's an online course that might be just what you're looking for.
Teaching the Bible, Hosting the Conversation will be offered in six sessions this summer. Facilitated by the president of the Lutheran Association of Christian Educators, the course features presentations by professors of Christian education and biblical studies from ELCA colleges and seminaries. It uses DVDs, reading assignments, and online interaction to explore such topics as how adults learn, how to design teaching/learning experiences, multi-cultural approaches to Bible teaching, and the use of media in teaching.
Here's what one former participant says about Teaching the Bible: "I believe that what I have learned has transformed my whole approach to Christian education and the techniques and methods I will use to teach in the future."

New Lay Member of Budget & Finance Committee Needed
The Budget & Finance Committee will have an opening for a lay person in June 2011, due to the transfer of one of its members to another state.
Committee members should have an interest in financial matters, but are NOT expected to be experts in finance and accounting. This committee meets by conference call at least twice a year to review the synod's overall financial situation and make recommendations to the synod council as needed. The committee also meets once a year in person to formulate a budget proposal for the synod council and synod assembly. This meeting is usually scheduled for the first Saturday in December, usually at the synod office in Atlanta. Lay persons interested in being appointed to the Budget and Finance Committee may indicate their interest by completing the form located HERE. Those who are potentially interested but who would like additional information may contact either B&F Chairperson John Rossing (jrossing@windstream.net) or Fiscal Advisor Sandra Gustavson (sgustavson@elca-ses.org). |

During that week, she will be able to study and interact with seminary faculty and students, as well as enjoy a period for growth and renewal.

"New Kid on the Block" shares ecumencal tradition
|
Jonesborough Presbyterian Church |
Cross of Grace Lutheran Church in Jonesborough, TN is the "new kid on the block," being one of the youngest Southeastern Synod mission congregations. They currently rent worship space for Sunday services, and recently found out that the space would not be available for Maundy Thursday. Mission Pastor Ed Wolff took his dilemma to the Rev. Allan Huff, the pastor of Jonesborough Presbyterian Church (JPC), one of the oldest churches located in the downtown area of Jonesborough, one of the oldest towns in Tennessee.
When Pastor Wolff asked if Cross of Grace members could worship with those of JPC on Maundy Thursday, Pastor Huff responded by asking Pastor Wolff to be a full partner in the service. The sermon will be a dialogue between the two. Both will participate in administering Holy Communion, and each will read psalms while the altar is stripped.
Since JCP does not have a Good Friday service, Pastor Wolff then invited Pastor Huff to participate in Cross of Grace's Tenebrae service on Friday evening. Pastor Huff is delighted and many JPC members plan to attend. What a wonderful way to be God's people, together.

Lutheridge/Lutherock Ministries was the recipient of a $250,000 gift to name the "great room" in the new multi-use retreat center at Lutheranch. The gift came from St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Forest Park, GA, which closed its doors following the December 24, 2010 Christmas Eve worship service. While it is disappointing for a congregation to close, the remaining members are very excited about the legacy that they will be leaving at Lutheranch as the great room will be named the St. Timothy Room. The cross from the nave will also be in the great room, along with a Luther rose window. A granite altar will be used for an outdoor worship area on Wood Duck Lake.

Congratulations to the Rev. Robert and Jean Graetz, of Montgomery, AL, who will recieve the Alumni Distinguised Service Award from Capital University in Columbus, OH on April 30. Pastor and Mrs. Graetz openly supported the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a landmark event of the U.S. civil rights movement. For his support of the boycott, Graetz and his family were ostracized by other whites and suffered several episodes of harassment, including tire slashings, arrest and bombings. Graetz wrote A White Preacher's Memoir: The Montgomery Bus Boycott about his experiences.
