What is "Old?" | |
by the Rev. Dr. Delmer Chilton Assistant to the Bishop, Southeastern Synod
I was talking to an old friend the other day, mostly about being old. (Today is my birthday; this is the sort of thing one thinks about on birthdays, at least those of us of a certain age.) Now according to my mother, who is 81, 57 is not at all old. According to my great-nephew, who is 15, I am old as dirt itself. The truth, as in most things, lies somewhere in the middle.

Southeastern Synod Assembly
The Southeastern Synod will meet in Assembly June 3-5, 2011 at Marriott's Renaissance Waverly Hotel, Atlanta GA.

Our special guest speaker will be the Rev. Andrew D. Genszler, Director of Advocacy at the ELCA Washington Office.
Find out more about the Synod Assembly or register at www.elca-ses.org/Assembly.html.
Consultation / Discipline Nominees Needed
The Synod Nominating Committee must identify several candidates for positions on the Consultation and Discipline Committees, to be elected at the 2011 Synod Assembly. These committees rarely meet, and it is very possible that elected members may not ever meet during their terms. It is very important, though, that both groups have wise, responsible members who would be able to step in and serve if needed.
The purpose of the Consultation Committee is to provide advice to Bishop Gordy in investigating situations that are potentially matters for formal discipline. The Discipline Committee is a pool of individuals who would be available for potential participation in disciplinary hearings, according to ELCA procedures.
Both clergy and lay candidates are needed for both committees. If you know of persons you believe would be good candidates for these committees, please urge them to consider making themselves available for nomination. Additional information about the positions is available HERE. Persons who are interested in service must complete the 2011 Biographical Form and submit it no later than March 15. |

Book of Faith Brief | |

Brand new Book of Faith studies Augsburg Fortress has just released two new Bible studies in the Book of Faith series. One is an eight-lesson study of Luke in the "Books of Faith" series. The other is a five-lesson study of First Peter in the "Together in Faith" series. The First Peter study, titled "God's Own People," follows the lectionary readings for the first five Sundays after Easter (the five Sundays in May this year.) You can find both of these studies, along with all the rest of the Book of Faith resources, at Augsburg Fortress.
Also, remember that there are now three Book of Faith Lenten Journey books. The new one for this year is Book of Faith Lenten Journey: Seven Wonders of the Word. The 2010 and 2009 books-Marks of the Christian and 40 Days with the Lord's Prayer-are also still available. These books are great for personal or small group personal growth during Lent; they also include downloadable supplemental material for worship, which makes them easily adaptable for a midweek or Sunday Lenten worship series.

First Annotated Bibliography of Lutheran Women Scholars in Religion Now Online
The ELCA Justice for Women Program is pleased to present the first annotated bibliography of Lutheran women scholars in religion in the United States! Knowing how challenging it can be in research and writing to find other Lutheran scholars outside of immediate professional circles, Justice for Women has endeavored to create one field of access to the works of Lutheran women scholars in biblical, theological and religious studies.
Check it out at http://www.elca.org/Our-Faith-In-Action/Justice/Justice-for-Women/Bibliography.aspx.

Pitts Theology Library Hosts "Muhlenberg at 300"

In June the Pitts Theology Library at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, will host a unique traveling exhibit entitled "Muhlenberg at 300," which celebrates the life of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg (1711-1787), the German Lutheran theologian often credited with the founding of the Lutheran church in the United States. The exhibit features twenty large panels about Muhlenberg's life and influence. In addition, some complementary materials from the Pitts Library's special collections will be displayed. While the exhibit will be available to the public during the library's normal summer hours (7:30 AM-5 PM, Monday-Friday), a special Sunday event at 6:00-8:00 PM on June 5 will open the exhibit. After some brief introductory remarks, the exhibit will be open for review so that guests can proceed at their own pace through the display. This evening will be the only opportunity to see this exhibit during evening or weekend hours. Light refreshments will be served. Members of local congregations that have an interest in early American Lutheranism, Pietism, or German Reformation Theology are invited to attend this event. If interested, please contact Tracy Powell, Pitts Theology Library Head of Public Services, at (404) 727-1221.

AROUND THE SYNOD | |
In the March issue of The Lutheran, Andrea Roths from Reformation Lutheran Church in Greeneville, TN recounts the story below in the "Light Side" on page 45.
In the van after school one day I was trying to explain to my son, Spencer, and daughters, Casey and Jamie, why we have Ash Wednesday and how the pastor puts ashes on people's foreheads. Jamie began wondering what she should give up for Lent when Spencer announced, "I think I'll give up Ash Wednesday." No way was the pastor going to dump ashes on him.
