Blizzards, Tornados and Floods...Oh My!

As another record-breaking winter storm unfolds, it is a perfect time to consider your level of disaster readiness.  We all share the responsibility to be READY for any type of disaster that could effect us, our families, and our communities.  The steps are quick and easy, and being READY can provide you with peace of mind, no matter the situation.  Go to www.ldr.org/ready, and get yourself and your family READY today!

Nashville FloodIt's also time to start planning for spring floods.  Record snows this winter combined with an unusually wet autumn have forecasters calling for a serious threat of flooding this spring.  If you live in a flood-prone area, you might be eligible for flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program.  These policies take 30 days from the date of purchase to take effect, which means that if you live in an area that could potentially flood, you should apply today.  For more information, visit www.floodsmart.gov.

Most importantly, remember in your prayers all those who will be exposed to the snow, ice, wind, and cold in the coming days, especially those who are homeless and seeking shelter, and the first responders who will be serving anyone in need.

Which Way is Right?

The Rev. Dr. Delmer Chilton
Assistant to the Bishop
ELCA-Southeastern Synod

A friend of mine is a member of a spiritual order for lay people. The members of her group agree to live by a common covenant to pray and serve the world and to be accountable to one another. She and the other members in her geographic grouping get together for worship and fellowship about once a month.

DirectionsMy friend shared with me a story about a recent worship service that got off to a bit of a rocky start, with a little confusion about the readings and who was doing what, and that sort of thing. After the service and before the meeting one member complained bitterly about the worship, saying, "I would be embarrassed to bring a friend to our worship, we're so disorganized."

Book of Faith Brief
Book of Faith

                                                   http://www.bookoffaith.org/

The Wednesday night Bible study class at Christ the King Lutheran Church  in Dalton, GA, has used several Book of Faith studies over the past couple of years. Right now, the class is using Songs of the Faithful: Studies in Psalms. This is a great study series-maybe the best Book of Faith study yet.

Songs of the Faithful is part of the "Together in Faith" series, which connects Bible study with worship and the lectionary. The psalms in the study are used in the Pentecost season of year C, but they can be studied on their own at any time.

In this book, psalms of various genres are paired with modern poems. Through the modern poetry and the biblical texts, readers see how poetic literature can express deep personal emotion and profound insights into faith and human need. The learner's guide makes good use of the Book of Faith Initiative's four approaches to Bible study: historical, literary, Lutheran theological, and devotional.

Participants in the class at Christ the King have been drawn into lively and very personal discussions and have come away from each week's class with a new awareness of how the Psalms speak to us and for us.

Learners' and leaders' guides for all Book of Faith studies are available from Augsburg Fortress.

Blessings,
Your Book of Faith advocates

Greetings from Guatemala

                        Guatemala

Below are excerpts from three letters sent to the Southeastern Synod from congregations of La Iglesia Luterana Agustina de Guatemala (ILAG) - the Augustinian Lutheran Church in GuatemalaILA San Pedro Apostol and ILA San Juan Bautista are two of the three newest ILAG churches.

********************************************************************

From: Iglesia Luterana Agustina Jesus de los Milagros.

Community Israel - January 04, 2011

Dear Brothers and sisters from the Southeastern Synod. Receive our cordial greetings. We hope and pray that your health is well and that our Lord is pouring many blessings on you.

The members of the congregation Iglesia Luterana Agustina Jesus de los Milagros wish that you have a prosper year. We send you many hugs for each one of you. Know that you are always in our hearts, we pray for you every Sunday asking God to give you health, hope and unity. We remember our brothers and sisters of your synod who have visited us and we send special greetings to them.

The church members and Padre Ricardo realized different activities in the church. We taught catechism to the children of the church and we studied the bible. We did these with the objective that all the members of the congregation are able to participate and that all of us can serve God.

For this New Year 2011 we have set ourselves a goal, to construct the church building. It has been difficult because we do not have the funds to start. We have our faith placed in God that He will help us, He will give us our health and our strength to work.

We ask you to pray for us so that we can reach our dreams. With prayers and our faith placed in God we can receive what we ask from Him.

The children from our congregation send you many blessings and hugs to each one of you.

We hope that one day not too far away we could continue to communicate through letters.

Attentively,

Parish Council

Bishop's School 2011

Please take a minute to think of that one special youth in your congregation.  You the know one... he or she is always asking you the hard questions, excelled in Confirmation class, and just seems to have a yearning to deepen his or her faith.  If that youth is a current 11th or 12th grader, please nominate him or her for the 2011 Bishop's School.

The 2011 Bishop's School will be held the week of June 19-25 on the campus of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC.  Youth from all over the southeast will come together to study with seminary professors, worship in Christ Chapel and witness the way God is working in the world and in their own lives.  They'll learn what it means to think theologically!

Find a brochure with additional information at http://www.elca-ses.org/Youth&Young-Adults.html. Please note, nominations are due by March 1, 2011.  (Feel free to nominate more than one youth from your congregation.)

Register for the 2011 Hunger Walk/Run

It's time again for the annual Hunger Walk/Run, a project of the Atlanta Community Food Bank.  The event will take place on March 13th 2011 at Turner Field. Registration begins at 12:00pm with the 5k Walk/Run starting at 2:00 PM. Lutheran presence in the Walk/Run has historically been extremely high and we want to make sure that this remains the case! Lutheran Services of Georgia is one of the partnering organizations, helping to lead the way in our call to care for those who go hungry in Georgia.

If your congregation has not already formed a team, please consider doing so today. Teams can be as large or small as you would like. This is a great opportunity to have a Youth Group or Adult Education Class come together for a day of fun and service.  Unable to participate? You can still financially support someone else from your congregation or the Synod who is. Check out http://www.hungerwalkrun.org/ for more information. You may also contact Kyle Cristofalo at kcristofalo@elca-ses.org with any questions.
