The Cross and Christmas
by the Rev. Dr. Delmer Chilton, Assistant to the Bishop

A few years ago, on a Thursday afternoon just before Christmas, I went down to a local retirement center for a concert. Several of the members of the Choir were also members of my church.

They did a very hilarious version of "I'm getting nuttin' for Christmas." Do you know the song? A little boy sings about all the mischief he's been in, and then the chorus goes:"I'm getting nuttin' for Christmas, 'cuz I ain't been nuttin' but bad."

Two weeks before Christmas, you might still have someone on your gift list that you haven't finished shopping for. Have you thought about giving that person a Bible that they'll actually want to read? Here's just a quick sample of titles from Augsburg Fortress; you can easily find many other appropriate Bibles from other sources.

God Loves Me  is a Bible for 2-4 year olds.

The Spark Story Bible is a collection of 150 Bible stories for young children. It includes an activity suggestion for each story.

The Spark Bible is an NRSV with activities and reflection questions for 3rd - 5th graders.

Here We Stand Lutheran Study Bible is for confirmation-age students. It includes background articles, study notes, and age-appropriate explanations. Its ample introductory and explanatory material also makes it a good Bible for adults with little prior exposure to the Bible.

The Message Remix 2.0 is a popular contemporary language Bible especially aimed at high school and college students.

The Zondervan NIV Study Bible, the New Oxford Annotated Bible (NRSV), and the HarperCollins Study Bible (NRSV) are good general study Bibles - used in many ways, with a wide range of historical and textual notes and essays. New Oxford and HarperCollins are standard editions for college Bible classes.

The Lutheran Study Bible, Augsburg Fortress' newest Bible edition, is part of the Book of Faith series. It's rich in historical, cultural, textual, theological, and reflective notes and articles.

Other choices include standard hardcover NRSV and Good News Bibles.

Even if all your Christmas shopping is finished, keep these Bibles in mind for future birthdays, graduations, confirmations, and other gift-giving occasions.

Blessings,
Your Book of Faith advocates
