Lutheran Disaster Response & the American Red Cross | |
Yesterday morning, in a ceremony at the American Red Cross National Headquarters in Washington, D.C., the long-standing partnership between Lutheran Disaster Response and the American Red Cross was re-affirmed in the signing of a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreement. The purpose of the agreement is to state formally the many ways in which Lutheran Disaster Response, its affiliates, and individual Lutheran congregations partner with the American Red Cross and its chapters, before, during, and after disasters. Among other things, the agreement encourages Lutheran congregations to consider becoming Red Cross shelter sites as part of their disaster preparedness planning. Rev. Kevin Massey, Director of Lutheran Disaster Response, was one of the signatories of the formal agreement, along with Joe Becker, Senior Vice President of Disaster Services, and Juliet Choi, Senior Director of Disaster Partnerships, both with the American Red Cross. The agreement has a term of five years, at which point it can be reviewed and updated to reflect new components of the organizations' working relationship. "We are humbled by the long-term nature of our relationship with the American Red Cross and honored to re-affirm our relationship with them through the signing of this agreement," said Massey. "This renewed MOU calls us both to more specific work together, much of which already was and is happening, and it is important to recognize that work here." A copy of the agreement, as well as pictures from the signing ceremony, can be found on the Lutheran Disaster Response website at www.ldr.org. Book of Faith Brief |
|
http://www.bookoffaith.org/
One popular resource that explores biblical interpretation from a Lutheran lens is Mark Allan Powell's How Lutherans Interpret the Bible. Dr. Powell is a Lutheran pastor and Bible professor at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio. In this seven session video series, he invites participants to explore seven important questions about Lutherans and the Bible. This study complements Opening the Book of Faith, the first foundational resource made available as part of the Book of Faith Initiative. The resource includes a DVD and study guide and is available through Select Learning. The study guide offers three suggested formats for use, including a format for use with committees and other congregation leadership groups. Visit this link to learn more and to see an excerpt from the study.

Each year, over half a million Americans are impacted by the suicide of a loved one/friend. You may know these people, but not know they are "survivors of suicide." They may not
yet be able to talk about their loss.
Please share this information with all you know. Chances are you will be extending a "hope line" to people suffering in painful silence. |

AROUND THE SYNOD | |
Snapshots...

On Sunday October 31, the Rev. Ronald Bonner was recieved on the roster of the ELCA and installed as pastor of Lutheran Church of the Atonement in Atlanta, GA. The Rev. Darrel Peterson, Assistant to the Bishop of the Southeastern Synod, presided at the service.
Duane Stugelmeyer, council president at St. John's in Nashville, TN is excited about the mentoring program getting underway in their church. Pastor Rick Roberts is matching adult volunteers with youth and children in the congregation. Adult mentors will be intentional about building a faith-based relationship with those they are mentoring. St. John's college students appreciated the care packages they received recently from their church family.

Check it out: Through the Room in the Inn program, St. John's is also helping to providing meals, a warm place to sleep and an opportunity to do laundry twice a month for Nashville's homeless. http://www.roomintheinn.org/.
Pastor Bob Maier, Transition Pastor at Advent in Murfreesboro, TN, reports that recently a church member came to him and said, "We need to celebrate! Despite the difficulties of the past year, we are still here, still worshiping, and still engaged in meaningful ministry!"
As the church prepares for its annual congregational meeting, many remember that it was about this time a year ago that Advent met for a special called congregational meeting to vote on withdrawing from the ELCA. That resolution failed and some were concerned about Advent's future. Today, however, Advent is thriving. Pastor Maier and the people of Advent invite you to visit their website at http://www.theadventchurch.com/ and see what all the smiles are about!
