Staying Connected | |
by the Rev. Darrel Peterson
Remember the days when if we were in an airport, we would call our friends from a pay phone? I even remember growing up and seeing in our local newspaper that someone had received a telegram or a long distance phone call. It usually was a message that some relative or friend had died. We now live in an age where we are incredibly connected. Cell phones, Blackberries, Facebook, Twitter, email, even traditional voicemail make it possible for us to keep in close contact around the clock and around the world. Read the rest of this meditation on the synod blog. ********************************************************************

Book of Faith Brief |
|
http://www.bookoffaith.org/
Thank you all for some great conversations about the Book of Faith initiative at the Leadership Convocation last week! In our workshop "listening post" sessions and in casual conversation, we heard some great comments, suggestions, and questions about BOF. Your synod BOF advocates even learned some things from you that we didn't know about BOF resources. We want very much to continue those conversations electronically (or in person, but those opportunities are few in our synod), so we ask you again to join our synod's Book of Faith social network page. Find it at http://bookoffaith.ning.com/group/southeasternsynodgatnalms. Here are two new conversation threads you can find on the social network page:
1) In your Bible studies using Book of Faith material or methods, what has been the most significant thing participants have discovered or realized for the first time about the Bible?
2) If you've used any Bible studies produced by the Book of Faith initiative, which one has been your favorite? What do you like about it?
Join the network and share your responses to those questions-- or ask your own!
Blessings, Your Book of Faith advocates Pastor John Rossing Christ the King, Dalton, GA ctkdalton@optilink.us 706-278-3979 Michelle Angalet, Associate in Ministry Good Shepherd, Woodstock, GA michelle.angalet-gslc@comcast.net

Lutheran Summer Music to Celebrate 30 Years |
|
Lutheran Music Program Reaches Milestone:
Celebrates 30 Years of Training Young Musicians for the Church
Lutheran Music Program will reach a milestone in 2011 when it presents the 30th annual Lutheran Summer Music Academy & Festival (LSM) from June 26 to July 24 on the campus of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
LSM fosters musical excellence in a caring community for high school band, orchestra, choir, piano, and pipe organ students of all faith backgrounds. More than 160 high school students from across the country will attend the four-week residential training and performance program. Open to students of all faiths, but centered in Lutheran music and liturgical traditions, LSM encourages students to use music as a catalyst for the exploration of personal faith and creativity. Once selected through an application and audition process, LSM students engage in a comprehensive and diverse program that includes individual instrument lessons; chamber ensembles; jazz and early music ensembles; musicianship classes; orchestra, choir, and/or band; electives ranging from church music history to handbell choir and conducting; and a culminating Festival of performances.

Students are accepted on a rolling basis, so interested youth are encouraged to apply online soon. For more information on Lutheran Music Program, the 30th annual Lutheran Summer Music Academy & Festival, or the Young Musicians Partnership, visit www.lutheransummermusic.org or contact the organization's national offices in Minneapolis at 888-635-6583 or lsm@lutheransummermusic.org. |

The workshops include discussions with retired and active duty chaplains, visits to Ft. Jackson and the chaplain schools, and discussion/lectures on history, ethics, theology and practice of military chaplains during war and peace time. Oktoberfest Update
story and photo by Mr Matt Steinhauer
Faith Lutheran Church in Lebanon, TN hosted its first Oktoberfest on the church grounds. The event included a fine offering of German cuisine with a plate of Bratwurst, kraut, red cabbage, German potato salad, and Black Forrest cake or Apple Strudel for dessert. In addition to a Biergarten, festival food such as popcorn, peanuts and funnel cakes were available. Craft and jewelry vendors offered their goods and the Lebanon Fire Department brought a pumper truck. There were children's games and activities, a water balloon toss, live music and a silent auction.
Those who enjoyed the festivities included church members and guests from the community, and a crew of disaster recovery volunteers (working on projects from May floods and staying at Faith) from New York and Michigan.
