"Many good questions were posed at the Town Hall: peace in the Middle East; racial diversity in our church; rostered and lay ministries; mission development and how to keep the Gospel central when it's so easy to be defined by the hot button topics that divide us. And this is only part of an ongoing conversation! May it bear much good fruit."
This is what one person said about the September 19 Town Hall Forum with ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson. If you think this sounds like a fruitful conversation, mark the following dates on your calendar! Consider hosting a viewing event for your congregation for those who can't access it online at home.

Have you seen the October issue of The Lutheran? |
|
Here's a quick look at the October issue of The Lutheran. This issue is currently online at www.thelutheran.org.
TIME TO SIMPLIFY? In a skit, a robber tells Jack Benny: "Your money or your life." The frugal Benny eventually responds, "I'm thinking about it." The Lutheran's October issue notes that simple living isn't a lifestyle option anymore-it really is "your money or your life." Read "If you're like me" and consider embracing "lifestyle simplicity" as a core identity and set of behaviors for yourself and your congregation. See how one congregation chose simplicity in "First Lutheran seeks what should be first." A study guide is available in the print edition and at www.thelutheran.org ( free to print subscribers and supporting Web members; click on "study guides").
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT. The Lutheran's October issue contains articles for study and thought. In these troubling times, read "What's on your plate?" A writer revisits her popular article from January 2002 called "God will never give you more than you can handle." A study guide is available for this article at www.thelutheran.org (free to print subscribers and supporting Web members; click on "study guides"). Also in the October issue: "How to embrace yourself," and why you need to; and "Precious and loved," baptism introduces us to a God who actually wants us.
THERE'S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE in The Lutheran's October issue ... get a review of Amy Grant's latest album "Better than Hallelujah," where songs of lament also contain much hope ...find inspiration for faith-based names for babies ... read reviews of the movie Mao's Last Dancer and the children's book The Ink Garden of Brother Theophane ... meet a man who went on a journey for knowledge to help his church grow an African ministry ... goback to school and see how Lutheran-affiliated schools in New York City and Namibia spell success for youth.
TRY THESE IDEAS in your church. Look to The Lutheran's October issue for resources and tips for your congregation: visit a Tennessee church, where an annual pet blessing is an outreach to the community ... create an Advent calendar or take the "no phone zone" pledge ... see how the closing of a Washington congregation led to redevelopment that has breathed new life and spirit into the community ... and meet some amazing kids who are excited to be active in church and doing God's work.
