New LIFT Documents for Review

The work of the task force for "Living Into the Future Together: Renewing the Ecology of the ELCA" is guided by two questions:
  1. What is God calling this church to be and to do in the future?
  2. What changes are in order to accomplish these tasks more faithfully?
These are important questions that will lead the ELCA into the future. The input of all ELCA members is needed to faithfully address these items.

LIFTThe task force has posted two new documents on it's webpage, www.elca.org/lift.  The first is an analysis of research conducted thus far. The second is a request for member participation in developing potential scenarios for the ELCA's future mission and ministry.

Please be sure to:

-Share these documents with your congregation;

-Read the Jan. 28, 2010 ELCA news release;

-Consult frequently asked questions; and

-Visit http://liftELCA.org to contribute suggestions, post comments and follow task force's latest news.

AROUND THE SYNOD

News from the Middle Tennessee cluster

Southeastern Synod Pastor Gretchen Person, Assistant Director for Religious Life at Vanderbilt University, extends an invitation for all to attend Vanderbilt University's longest-running, university-based lecture series on the Holocaust. For more on this year's theme of "DIFFERENT Speaking/INDIFFERENT Listening" see the HLS website: Holocaust Lecture Series.

St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Nashville, continues to provide more and more emergency food boxes to the surrounding community through the operation of a Second Harvest satellite food distribution center. In addition, the breakfast program for the homeless women and children of the Family Life Center resumed earlier this year when residents returned to the North Nashville site.

Although St. Paul's is a tiny congregation, (average weekly worship attendance is about 14) they are huge in spirit and continue to serve the most disadvantaged in North Nashville with a very significant and vital "hands on" ministry. For St. Paul's, as for other businesses, the cost of maintaining and preserving the buildings, utilities, and insurance rises every year.

St. Paul's needs at least one volunteer willing to be trained to be a relief food bank manager and additional volunteers to work in the operation and help maintain a Lutheran presence in this ministry. In addition, they have a grant from Thrivent to purchase part of the materials for a new roof on the food bank. We need an additional $2,500 to finish purchasing the materials.

Please give prayerful consideration to supporting this urban social ministry.  Checks may be made out and sent to St. Paul's, mailed to PO Box 280805, Nashville, TN 37208-0805

country hamPeace Lutheran Church (Spring Hill, TN) once again participated in the Country Ham festival by having a booth in the Kids Zone on Saturday, October 2.  Many people stopped by to throw Frisbees through hula hoops.  It was a great way to meet people in the community and the weather was awesome!
