Southeastern Synod blog entry by the Rev. Darrel Peterson
Assistant to the Bishop of the Southeastern Synod
A vital message in our Lutheran legacy is the inscription that Johann Sebastian Bach wrote at the end of his music,
S D G Soli Deo Gloria (to God alone, the glory). Church musicians will still sometimes include that familiar and profound message at the end of their work. And as I see those three little words, I am grateful that my high school Latin has again been put to good use!
As I make my way among congregations and church leaders these days, it often occurs to me that we are seriously lacking in the perspective that what we are doing in the faith is ultimately about God. There are long discussions about planning and facilitating. Who is in charge of this?
How do we want this to be done? Will the people turn out for that? Who will get credit?

Ministry Funding Requests Due September 17 |
|
A reminder that agencies, institutions, and most other groups seeking synod financial support must apply by September 17, 2010 for possible inclusion in the proposed 2012-13 Ministry Funding Plan (budget). Groups included in the approved 2011-12 Ministry Funding Plan should have received individualized funding request forms via e-mail. An online version of the request form is also available. Synod committees and task forces operate on a different budgeting cycle from other groups. This Fall they will be requesting funding for the 2011-12 fiscal year. Committee and task funding request forms are available online and must be submitted by September 17, 2010. Questions about these processes may be addressed to Pastor John Rossing, who chairs the synod's Budget and Finance Committee. |

Book of Faith Brief |

www.bookoffaith.org
Hot off the Press! Check out the newest Book of Faith resource called The Greatest Story: Bible Introduction. The Greatest Story is a 16 session basic introduction to the Bible. As its name says, this course is for anyone who wants to get a big-picture overview of the Bible, the story it tells, and see how that story intersects with our own stories. The study was designed especially for young adults and those who are new to Bible study. Resources include a leader book, participant book, and a DVD resource. They are available now at www.augsburgfortress.org. Samples will be available for rostered leaders to preview at the Southeastern Synod Leadership Convocation in October. Take a moment now to see what this is all about!

Advent/Christmas Mission and Worship Stories |
|
Has your congregation made connections between worship and mission? We want to hear your stories. The Nov/Dec issue of "Seeds for the Parish," an ELCA publication that goes out to all congregational leaders, both clergy and lay, will feature worship in their Advent/Christmas edition.
The office of Worship and Music is particularly interested in stories for the front page that could explore the link between the liturgy and our mission in the world. How do we bring the needs of the world into our ritual practice, and how do we pattern our worship life to speak of God's compassion, mercy, and justice? If you have a story to tell, please send it to one of our synod's Partners in Evangelical Worship, Nancy Christensen ( nchristensen@elca-ses.org) or Kevin Strickland ( pastorkevinstrickland@gmail.com.) |
