Five Year Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina |
|
from the ELCA blog by The Rev. Kevin Massey, Director, Lutheran Disaster Response
"... but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint." - Isaiah 40:31
Sisters and brothers in Christ,
Sunday August 29th, 2010 marks the five-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina making landfall on the Gulf Coast. Across our country, and even around the world, there will be solemn remembrances as we keep alive the memories of the people and the places that were lost to that terrible storm. The passing of time cannot fully heal, but only lessens, the anguish and grief felt in the days that followed the disaster.
I encourage Lutherans everywhere to take time Sunday August 29th to remember in your worship and prayer all of the people affected by Hurricane Katrina. Please especially remember the pastors and people of the ELCA Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod, the ELCA Southeastern Synod, and the LCMS Southern District who have served so faithfully in the five years following Katrina.

What Is Your Calling Card? |
|
by the Rev. Dr. Beverly Wallace
Assistant to the Bishop, Interim Director LTCA at ITC
Many students are returning back to school. Here on the campus of the Interdenominational Theological Center (where the Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta is housed) seminarians have begun to register for classes that begin next week. Some of our young people who are going away to college and are on their own for the first time are trying to discern what will they be and do when they complete their education. And many of our very young kindergarten and first graders are too, as their teachers begin to get acquainted with their new students by asking the question, "So what do you want to be when you grow up?" Many of you remember the question and some of us yet today ask ourselves, "What am I going to be when I grow up?" As for me personally, I am still trying to figure that out.
The other day in a dinner meeting with individuals discussing the potential and possibilities for the Lutheran Theological Center, a woman suggested that there was a need for young people to have education about their direction in life and lamented the fact that the Lutherans didn't talk very much about vocation. "Ah, but we do," (or "We are supposed to,") I responded. And it is true...

Book of Faith Brief |
|
www.bookoffaith.org
Bible study is just one aspect of faith formation for Christians. As we try to make the Bible accessible and lift up its importance for the lives of our faith communities, it is good to do so with an eye on trends that the church is experiencing in faith formation. Knowledge of these trends, and their implications, may help to shape our various approaches to Bible study among those we serve. An excellent resource for looking at trends in faith formation, and their potential implications, is the Faith Formation 2020 National Initiative. This link provides a description of this Initiative and access to the Lifelong Faith website. Now Online: Q & A Webcast with Presiding Bishop Hanson |
|
Last week, ELCA communicators, campus ministry staff and chaplains, and college/university students met together in Chicago for a conference titled, "Follow Me: Sharing the Gospel in a 2.0 World." On Saturday, as part of the conference, Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson hosted a Q&A webcast, taking questions from conference participants as well as questions sent via text messages from all over the country. "This isn't a press conference - this is about people of faith deepening the discussion," said Hanson. You may be interested in viewing this; and you may just see some people you know! It's online now. Click here to connect.

Lutheran Ministries of Alabama Citizenship Program Hits Milestone |
|
In May of 2010, personnel from the Bayou La Batre, AL Lutheran Ministries of Alabama office accompanied 2 people to the Federal Courthouse in Mobile, AL and witnessed their being sworn in as the 49th and 50th clients Lutheran Ministries of Alabama has helped to become U.S. citizens.
The Lutheran Ministries of Alabama office in Bayou La Batre, AL represents a population south of Interstate 10 that can best be described as "underserved." This is particularly true of the Asian population that began coming to America following the Vietnam Conflict in the 1970's. Largely composed of unskilled seafood industry workers, this group has been "invisible" socially, and because of language barriers, falls far below the federal poverty level. These factors historically prevented these residents from obtaining U.S citizenship.
During the Lutheran Disaster Relief/Lutheran Ministries of Alabama post-Katrina rebuilding and recovery efforts, it became apparent that citizenship services were desperately needed for this group. As the recovery effort was winding down in 2008, the Asian translators working in the Bayou office began to provide informal assistance to clients who wanted to become citizens.
With language skills in Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotian, Lutheran Ministries of Alabama was able to offer assistance, at no cost, and on a volunteer basis, to these clients, by translating naturalization forms, helping them to obtain waivers of the fees normally charged by the U.S. for testing and, often, by providing transportation to the testing site in Atlanta, GA.
In January of 2010, a small grant from Mobile Community Action, a large Mobile social services agency, allowed the assistance program to kick into high gear. Civics and government classroom sessions were organized to be presented weekly with English instruction being simultaneously translated to all three language groups. These 2 hour sessions reviewed all of the questions that would appear on the citizenship test, supplemented by instruction on American history, the constitution and key people in the historical and current American mosaic.
As word spread in the community about our service capability, 30-40 immigrants per week began attending these classes and, in March and April 2010, 15 new citizens per month were being sworn in following testing in Atlanta. Mrs. Jackie Dortch, the case manager for this program, attended the Mobile ceremonies on May 7th. "When our clients were sworn in, their eyes and their smiles told the whole story," she said. "It made every classroom hour more than worth the effort," she added.
The Bayou office is currently planning to seek Dept. of Justice certification as a registered and recognized citizenship service agency. This will permit the agency to work with volunteer attorneys to provide legal assistance and, in some difficult cases, courtroom representation to those clients needing this level of assistance.
Said Mrs. Dortch, "We have come a long way in a short time, but this community and communities all along the Gulf Coast, desperately need this kind of help. These good people have been left out of full participation in the American dream for far too long." |
