Lutherans Take Historic Step in Asking for Forgiveness from Mennonites |
|
STUTTGART, Germany (ELCA) -- In what the Rev. Mark S. Hanson described as possibly "the most significant legacy this assembly will leave," the Eleventh Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) here took the historic step of asking the Mennonites for forgiveness for past persecutions, according to a news release from Lutheran World Information (LWI). Delegates unanimously approved a statement July 22 calling Lutherans to express their regret and sorrow for past wrongdoings towards Anabaptists and asking for forgiveness, the release said.

A Millisecond of Love |
|
by the Rev. Nancy Christensen "When we look on our lives and the world with a little keener awareness and deeper compassion, we see that amidst the suffering and confusion, the conflicts and attempts at escape, even a millisecond of love is a miracle." Stephen Levine, from Healing into Life and Death I read somewhere that the season after Pentecost is the time when we inhabit the resurrection and fulfill the Great Commission. So, I have been reflecting on the shape and scope of resurrection, both for myself, and for us as a church. I have been wondering about mission and ministry in the midst of so much fear and heartache all around, and I have been gradually discovering (again) that the essence of new life always comes in and through the gift of love.

Deadline for "Call for Papers" Extended |
|
The deadline to submit papers to the Justice for Women program to be included in a collection of narratives that represent a wide range of experiences has been extended until August 9, 2010.
Lutheran women graduate students, Lutheran women academics, and women teaching at Lutheran institutions are invited to submit paper proposals for this fall's Lutheran Women in Theological and Religious Studies meeting, October 29, in Atlanta, Georgia (before the American Academy of Religion meeting, October 30 - November 1, 2010).
Theme: Listening Closely; Defining the Conversation
Lutheran theology and the Lutheran church are part of a global community which is dependent upon collective work to build community through careful listening and critical engagement. What is it that Lutheran women in theological and religious scholarship and practice need to hear and discuss?
From the beginning, Lutheran theology has been shaped by historical and social contexts, and it continues to be shaped by a variety of contexts. The organizers of this year's meeting invite proposals for papers around this question: What needs to be spoken from YOUR context?
Questions addressed may include but are not limited to: How do central themes in Lutheran theology speak within a given context? How does the particularity of a context challenge Lutheranism-both institutionally and theologically? What is the relationship between Lutheranism and themes such as embodiment, sexuality and/or everyday life? The planners of this gathering particularly encourage paper proposals from women who are African-American, Latina, Mujerista, Asian, Middle Eastern, American Indian, Alaska Native and/or womanist.
Please submit a 250-word paper proposal by August 9, 2010, to Mary Streufert mary.streufert@elca.org), Beverly Wallace ( revbwallace@gmail.com), and Melissa James ( melmjames@yahoo.com). Paper presentations should be 20 minutes long and will be followed by opportunities for response and discussion. The call is open to papers from the range of disciplines represented in the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature. We also encourage papers with a pedagogical focus. Presentations from students are welcomed and encouraged. The intention of this year's meeting is to serve as a springboard for the globally-focused joint (American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature) gathering of Lutheran Women in Theological and Religious Studies in San Francisco in 2011.

Pastor Beth Birkholz's grandfather loved to tell the story about Felix "Bush" Breazeale, a reclusive man from Cave Creek, TN, who threw himself a funeral party -- while still alive -- in 1938, so he could hear what people would say about him. The story is now being re-told in the Hollywood movie, Get Low, to be released July 30 in Los Angeles and New York. A nationwide release is expected in August. Beth's husband, Pastor Scott Seeke, co-wrote the movie. You can see Beth, Scott and their entire extended family, who were cast as extras in the film.
