2010 Hunger Walk/Run
|
|
The 2010 Hunger Walk/Run will take place Sunday, March 14 at
Turner Field, Atlanta, GA. Registration commences at noon and the 5K
Walk/Run starts at 2:00 p.m. Come be part of an exciting day as proceeds
from the Hunger Walk/Run support struggling children and families in our own
communities.
The Hunger Walk/Run brings Lutheran families together in support of hunger and
poverty relief for hurting families across Metro Atlanta. The fellowship
and deep commitment to service is evident among our Lutheran families who
participate in this event. More than $69,000 was raised last year from
our Lutheran congregations, serving thousands of families in need.
From your congregation's fundraising efforts, you can also receive a food grant
of 60% of the total that you raised that was received by Lutheran Services of
Georgia (LSG) or the maximum food grant allocation for this project! Not
only do vulnerable families receive help across Metro Atlanta, but families you
serve with your food ministry or local food bank can receive direct assistance.
Go to http://acfb.convio.net/hw_lutheran to register for the walk
and join the LSG group. While you are there, view the Hunger Walk video,
then email friends and family to request their support for the Hunger
Walk.
Questions? Call or email Robert Jackson at 678-686-9602 or rjackson@lsga.org. We
look forward to an exciting, spirit-filled occasion in which our faith,
service, and compassion for others will serve thousands of families in need.

Bishop's School - Deadline Extended
|
|
Please take a minute to think of that one special youth in your congregation. You know the one... he or she is always asking you the hard questions, excelled in Confirmation class, and just seems to have a yearning to deepen his or her faith. If that youth is a current 11th or 12th grader, please nominate him or her for the 2010 Bishop's School.
The 2010 Bishop's School will be held the week of June 20-26 on the campus of Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC. Youth from all over the Southeast will come together to study with seminary professors, worship in Christ Chapel and witness the way God is working in the world and in their own lives.
Click here for a brochure with additional information. Please note, nominations are due by March 22, 2010. (Feel free to nominate more than one youth from your congregation.)

"Mission Support" Supports Actual Mission!
|
|
When
Cross of Grace Lutheran Church in Jonesborough, TN, held their very FIRST
service on January 3, 2010, many people came, both from the immediate community
and from other places, too. Lots of
people were from the congregations of Conference 6 - from Greeneville, and
Kingsport, and Gatlinburg, and elsewhere - because they had given their above-and-beyond
financial support to this new mission.
Several had volunteered their time to go door-to-door with Pastor Wolff,
and had worked with him for many months to invite the un-churched and the de-churched of
Washington County. The
synod was represented, as was the ELCAand, in the midst of this gathering, ALL felt a sense of excitement and
partnership as this new venture began to take root. ALL prayed for God's blessings in the months
and years to come.
The
Southeastern Synod is known throughout the ELCA as the "mission field" of the
church. We have more congregations under
development, and more congregations in the midst of intentional renewal in this
synod than most whole regions can claim.
And we as a synod have made a commitment to partner with these new
ministrieswith our Mission Support
dollars and local participation.

The Rev. Ed Myers was installed as pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church, Savannah, GA on Sunday, January 17.

"New" Pipe Organ Installed at St. Andrew, Franklin, TN
On January 31, St. Andrew Lutheran heard the inaugural concert of it's newly-purchased and renovated pipe organ. Played that day by Olivier Latry, titular organist of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, Paris, the 52-stop organ is not only the single free-standing, encased instrument built by Aeolian-Skinner, but the next-to-the-last organ built by the company. St. Andrew's organist and choir master, Darrel Ray Miller, discovered the organ at an Episcopal cathedral in Kalamazoo, MI and oversaw the more-than-two-year journey of dismantling, removing, transporting, repairing, and renovating the instrument.
Pictures of the whole process, as well as more photos of their new building to be dedicated on May 2, may be seen at www.saintandrewchurch.com.
Congratulations Sandra
Sandra Braasch, LESM Director of Disaster Preparedness and Response, was recently elected President of Mississippi VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster). She will serve a two-year term.
