Affirm Breaking News!

AffirmCelia Whitler will perform at Affirm 2010!  Celia is from Nashville, TN.  She is so excited to join us again.  She has been a guest musician at both All-Georgia and All-Tennessee.  She performs at many ELCA events including the New Orleans Youth Gathering this past summer.  You can check her music out at www.celiamusic.net.  If you haven't heard, we are at a new location - Berry College in Rome, GA.  Rome a small college town about 1 1/2 hours northwest of Atlanta.  The administrative team met this past weekend to tour the college, make final plans for Affirm, and choose unit staffs.  We are so thrilled about the new opportunities, new schedules, and new digs at Berry!  But even though we are excited about all the new things, we have not changed our vision for Affirm: to create youth leaders, teach youth discipleship skills, and build up youth's faith through large and small groups living in a faith community.

Our theme this year is IMAGE.  We will dive deep into scriptures from Genesis, Colossians, Hebrews, 2 Corinthians, and Matthew as we look at ourselves, created in God's image, and challenge ourselves as creation, as new creations and what that means as we live in this world.  Registration is open at www.sesyouth.org and the cost is $350.  For your convenience, you can sign up and pay online with PayPal at this site.  If you have any questions please contact Rachel Alley at ralley@elca-ses.org; and if you would like someone to come and talk with your youth group about Affirm, we have youth and adults across the synod who are willing.

Souper Bowl of Caring

Souper Bowl

On Sunday, February 7, nearly 100 million Americans are expected to tune in to watch the Super Bowl. Many of them will be hosting or attending parties with abundant food, friendship and fellowship.  At the same time, nearly 1 billion people around the world will be hungry - worrying about staying warm, securing shelter and the source of their next meal.

The good news is that on Sunday, February 7, more than 2,000 groups of Lutheran youth will be working to change this. Will your youth group be one of them?

The Souper Bowl of Caring is a youth-led, ecumenical grassroots movement that unites youth for a single purpose: to end hunger. Collectively, this movement gathered gifts of $10.2 million and 4.5 million pounds of food in 2009. It's easy to join the movement-just visit the Souper Bowl of Caring Web site (www.souperbowl.org) to learn more, register your group and get started.

Bishop Gordy to Preach on "Day 1"
J. GordyBishop Julian Gordy will be the featured preacher February 14 on "Day 1," the nationally broadcast radio program also accessible by podcast at Day1.org.  The program includes a message by Bishop Gordy along with interviews conducted by the program's host and executive producer, Peter Wallace.

In his sermon for Transfiguration Sunday, based on Luke 9:28-36, Bishop Gordy helps listeners grapple with the relationship of science and faith: the two can be compatible because science can tell us the "how" of things but not the "why".  "The job of science is to remove the mystery from the world," he says.  "Faith's job is to show us the mystery and the holiness of God hiding everywhere."

Formerly known as "The Protestant Hour," "Day 1" celebrates 65 years of weekly broadcast in 2010.  Distributed to 200 radio stations across America and overseas, it is produced by the Alliance for Christian Media in association with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church.  The program has received numerous awards, including the George Foster Peabody Award and the Communicators' Award for Excellence in inspirational radio.

For more information, call toll free 888-411-Day1 or check the program's website, http://day1.org.

A NEW CONGREGATION JOINS ILAG!

Southeastern Synod Trip to Guatemala

June 18 - 26, 2010

This coming June, a new congregation will be officially received into Iglesia Luterana Augustina de Guatemala (ILAG), and a delegation from the Southeastern Synod will be there to celebrate with them!

Our synod relationship with ILAG has expanded and deepened over the course of many years.  We have learned much from each other, and we continue to share our resources and our passion for mission and ministry, with reciprocity, mutuality, and respect.

One of the best tools for cultivating this relationship is an annual trip by a delegation of people from our synod.  Each year, the pastoral team of ILAG develops an itinerary that offers rich engagement with the land and the people of Guatemala - as well as a thorough immersion into the ministries of the ILAG in that region.  IDEAL for the adventurer, this annual excursion promises to both inspire and challenge all who participate.

This year's trip, from June 18-26, will be no exception.  Traveling by van, by boat, and by foot, the Southeastern Synod group will go from the ILAG Lutheran Center in Guatemala to the rural villages of Chumila Ixila II and Community El Porvenir de los Martires, where a new congregation will be received into ILAG on June 22.

While in these villages, the delegation will stay with families, share meals, engage with the children, worship together, and learn about all the joys and the struggles of everyday life.  Healthcare activities will also be included, as well as extended opportunities for prayer and conversation.  A visit to Antigua Guatemala, and to Pacaya Volcano will be included in this trip as well.

The cost for the trip, including airfare, will be between $1,000 - $1,500, depending on the number of people in the delegation.  To reserve your spot, or for more information, please contact Bill Emerson at bemerson@knology.net, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

We All Need A Plan

Need a planIs my congregation prepared in the event of a disaster?  Are my family and I ready? Why prepare?  Where will I turn and how will I respond in the event of a disaster?  If I am stranded how will I survive? What is a disaster?  What are LDR, FEMA, ARC, VOAD & NVOAD, LTRC, VAL, CERT, NIMS, and UMCOR? I want to do something but how can I help?  What should I send? When is the right time to go help rebuild after a disaster?  What is our synod doing?

Very soon your area Southeastern Synod Volunteer Disaster Preparedness Coordinator will contact leaders in your congregation to help its members make a plan and answer the above questions.

On January 22 & 23, eleven of these coordinators, members of the Synod Task Force for Disaster Preparedness and Response, representatives from our four synod social ministry organizations, disaster consultants, Bishop Julian Gordy, a couple of Assistants to the Bishop, and others came together for the first Volunteer Disaster Preparedness Coordinator's training and commissioning in Talladega, Alabama at the Shocco Springs retreat center. The coordinators' training was led by the Rev. Dr. Morgan Gordy, Diaconal Minister Sandra Braasch, the Rev. Dr. Karnig Kazanjian and Lutheran-Episcopal Services in Mississippi Board President Ms. Ellen Noble.

This training is the result of hard work by the newly-formed Synod Task Force for Disaster Preparedness and Response. Due to changes at Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) and the fact that LDR is no longer funding preparedness, the Rev. Dr. Morgan Gordy presented an ELCA Southeastern Synod Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan to the Synod Council.  The plan was approved at the June 2009 Synod Council meeting then presented to the 2009 Synod Assembly.

The Disaster Preparedness Coordinators will now bring this information to leaders in our congregations to help us prepare in the event of a disaster, big or small.  If we are better prepared, then "Mission-Critical" activities (those everyday ministries that must move forward) can continue even during a disaster, and our fear, anxiety and loss may be reduced.  With a practiced plan, we will know how and when to move out of harm's way.  With a plan, we will know when to return to a disaster area. With a plan, we will be better prepared to bring God's presence to survivors.

Please welcome your Synod Volunteer Disaster Preparedness Coordinator when he or she contacts you.

Message on Suicide Prevention

At the 2009 Southeastern Synod Assembly, Resolution 2009-08 was adopted. This resolution encourages all synod congregations to promote suicide education, suicide prevention, and to provide ministry to those impacted by the suicide of a friend or loved one. Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States and claimed over 32,000 lives in 2005. It is the 8th leading cause of death for men of all ages, the second leading cause of death for people ages 25-34, the third leading cause of death among 15-24 year olds, and claims over 350 ELCA members annually.  Suicide is a very real and tragic problem that continues to affect the lives of many people in our nation.

The Southeastern Synod is truly blessed to have Gerald and Elsie Weyrauch who, through tragic personal experience, have made suicide awareness and prevention their life's work. The Weyrauchs founded the Suicide Prevention Action Network USA (Span USA) in 1996. "This organization was created to raise awareness, build political will, and call for action with regard to creating, advancing, implementing, and evaluating a national strategy to address suicide in our nation." (SPAN USA 2009) The Weyrauchs are an excellent resource and are willing to travel to your congregation to lead suicide education and prevention workshops. They can be reached at JerryWeyrauch@comcast.net or (770) 992-0482. (Financial assistance to help offset their travel expenses would be greatly appreciated.)

In November of 1999, The ELCA Message on Suicide Prevention was approved by the Synod Council, and memorialized at the 2009 Southeastern Synod Assembly. This document provides a basis for ELCA prevention action in these words "our efforts to prevent suicide grow out of our obligation to protect and promote life, our hope in God amid suffering and adversity, and our love for our troubled neighbor." One of the ways you can be a part of promoting suicide prevention is to be a part of the Volunteer Suicide Prevention Ministry by volunteering to be a contact person to receive and distribute information to your congregation and then communicate back what is happening on the congregational level. Another way to be a part of this wonderful ministry is to host a National Survivors of Suicide Day, a day dedicated to inviting those affected by suicide to come tell their story and share their grief.

The Synod Council urges members of the Southeastern Synod to support suicide prevention ministries and to be involved in helping to promote education, information, and support to those in need. May God bless you richly as you faithfully use your hands for God's work.

Other resources that are available are posted on our synod's website under the Resources menu.

2010 Hunger Walk/Run
Hunger Walk 2010The 2010 Hunger Walk/Run will take place Sunday, March 14 at Turner Field, Atlanta, GA.  Registration commences at noon and the 5K Walk/Run starts at 2:00 p.m.  Come be part of an exciting day as proceeds from the Hunger Walk/Run support struggling children and families in our own communities.

The Hunger Walk/Run brings Lutheran families together in support of hunger and poverty relief for hurting families across Metro Atlanta.  The fellowship and deep commitment to service is evident among our Lutheran families who participate in this event.  More than $69,000 was raised last year from our Lutheran congregations, serving thousands of families in need.

From your congregation's fundraising efforts, you can also receive a food grant of 60% of the total that you raised that was received by Lutheran Services of Georgia (LSG) or the maximum food grant allocation for this project!  Not only do vulnerable families receive help across Metro Atlanta, but families you serve with your food ministry or local food bank can receive direct assistance.

Go to http://acfb.convio.net/hw_lutheranto register for the walk and join the LSG group.  While you are there view the Hunger Walk video, then you can email friends and family to request their support for the Hunger Walk.

Questions?  Call or email Robert Jackson at 678-686-9602 or rjackson@lsga.org.  We look forward to an exciting, spirit-filled occasion in which our faith, service, and compassion for others will serve thousands of families in need.
