Haiti Earthquake Relief

HaitiA magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked the island country of Haiti on Tuesday, January 12. Buildings are destroyed, the search for survivors is intense and the streets of Haiti are filled with people in shock and searching for loved ones among the rubble. ELCA Disaster Response partners have survived the quake and are already working to serve the people of Haiti.

Your help is needed today to bring immediate relief and continued hope for our brothers and sisters in Haiti. About 3 million people, one-third of Haiti's population, were affected by this earthquake.

One hundred percent of your donation will be used for the relief efforts in Haiti.

Lilly Endowment Awards ELCA $1 Million
The Lilly Endowment, Indianapolis, has awarded nearly $1 million to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in American (ELCA) to continue and broaden its project that addresses the financial challenges of seminarians attending its eight seminaries.  The ELCA and partner institutions will match the grant with an additional $1.1 million.

Martin Luther King Service
Martin Luther KingPlease join us for the Martin Luther King Service at 3 PM on January 17th at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1829 Killian Hill Road, Lilburn, GA.  (phone number 770-972-4418, website www.tlc-lilburn.org)

Our theme this year is "Unity through Diversity".  The music will be wonderful, beginning with our processional song, "Come Together"!  Many groups will participate that day: Korean Dance Troupe, Team Lutheran Choir, Sagrada Familia Mime Troupe, St. Paul Choir and Dance Troupe, Trinity Bell Ringers and Band, and a Conference 3 Children's Choir.  The color for the day is red, all pastors and rostered lay leaders are invited to vest.  A financial offering will be collected for the Atlanta Union Mission, but we also ask that you bring at least one canned good to go to a local food pantry. (meats, vegetables, pasta and sauce, and peanut butter are especially welcomed.)

We look forward to seeing you at the service.  If you have any questions please contact Emma Clark at 404-457-9356.

Update from Lutheridge/Lutherock Ministries
Keith JohnsonDear Friends,

2009 has been a very challenging year for Lutheridge+Lutherock Ministries!  High unemployment resulted in budget cutbacks, forcing staff reductions and resulting in less funding to care for facilities.  ELCA churchwide assembly decisions have also caused stress and uncertainty.

Fortunately, LLMI remains strong and unchanged in its mission and focus.  Thanks to you and hundreds of other faithful supporters, the Christ-centered ministry and programs of of LLMI continue as they always have.  We served nearly 4,000 children and youth in our summer program, with over 425 receiving financial assistance to attend summer camp.  Year-round programs for adults and families maintained their quality and we continue to host congregational groups.  We even ended the year with a balanced budget.  Thanks be to God!

Become a "Fisher of Men"...

FishingThis men's retreat held April 9-11, 2010 at Lutherock offers an opportunity to be in a place where God can teach us a lot about ourselves and faith through the mountain waters.  There is time for learning knots and for practice casting before heading out together to the rivers on Saturday and Sunday morning.  Through devotions and worship we will prepare for a time of refection and prayer; enhancing the fishing experience beyond just catching and releasing.  The program begins after lunch on Friday and concludes with lunch on Sunday.  The cost for the retreat is $185 per person and includes Friday dinner through Sunday lunch, housing in Moretz Cabin and Crow's Nest and program costs.

A North Carolina fishing license is required and can be purchased online at www.ncwildlife.org.  Questions about the program, please contact Van Van Horne at van@llmi.org or 828-684-2361 ext. 303.  There will be a registration form on the Lutheridge/Lutherock website in the near future.
