2% in 2010
Health Risk AssessmentWe have the opportunity again in 2010 to all earn a 2% discount on ELCA health contributions.

Each congregation and organization in our synod will receive a 2% discount on contributions for all of 2010 if 65% of the ELCA-primary plan members and eligible spouses in our synod complete the online Mayo Clinic Health Assessment by April 30.  If we do not reach 65% participation by April 30, we will not receive the discount.  Our estimated collective savings for 2010 is $38,723.

The 2010 Health Assessment opened January 1.  If you have ELCA-primary health benefits, please plan to take 30 minutes January 1 - April 30 to complete the assessment.  If your spouse has ELCA-primary benefits, she or he should make plans to complete the assessment too.  Like the past two years, those completing the assessment will receive a $150 credit in their personal wellness account.

Completing the assessment is an act of stewardship for you and this church.

Learn more about the assessment at:  https://www.elcabop.org/UnderstandMyBenefits/Health/ELCAPrimary/HealthAssessment/WhatsNew.aspx

Martin Luther King Service
Martin Luther KingPlease join us for the Martin Luther King Service at 3 PM on January 17th at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1829 Killian Hill Road, Lilburn, GA.  (phone number 770-972-4418, website www.tlc-lilburn.org)

Our theme this year is "Unity through Diversity".  The music will be wonderful, beginning with our processional song, "Come Together"!  Many groups will participate that day: Korean Dance Troupe, Team Lutheran Choir, Sagrada Familia Mime Troupe, St. Paul Choir and Dance Troupe, Trinity Bell Ringers and Band, and a Conference 3 Children's Choir.  The color for the day is red, all pastors and rostered lay leaders are invited to vest.  A financial offering will be collected for the Atlanta Union Mission, but we also ask that you bring at least one canned good to go to a local food pantry. (meats, vegetables, pasta and sauce, and peanut butter are especially welcomed.)

We look forward to seeing you at the service.  If you have any questions please contact Emma Clark at 404-457-9356.

Day of Service to Honor Dr. King

Atlanta Lutherans Hold Day of Service on January 18 to Honor Dr. King

You are invited to celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday by participating in a Lutheran Day of Service on Monday, January 18. Youth and adults will meet at the Lutheran Services of Georgia (LSG) offices in Midtown Atlanta at 10 a.m. to repackages 50-pound bags of rice into usable 5 pound packages that will be given to refugee families new to the Atlanta area.  Rice is a main staple of these families.  Last year's rice project supplied rice that lasted almost six months!

The Day of Service is Micah 6 based:  Teach, Serve, Reflect.  The theological focus for the day will come from seminarians from our seven Lutheran seminarians who will be in Atlanta for the Urban Plunge sponsored by the Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta (LTCA). Each January, the Urban Plunge is a realistic and practical look at systemic issues affecting the breakdown of our society; the Plunge helps train our seminarians for service in similar urban areas as pastors and leaders.

Everyone is invited to collect packages of rice on January 10 and January 17 and bring them to the event to make the project more successful.   If you would prefer to make a donation toward the purchase of 50-pound bags (wholesale) of rice, please contact Gene Lewis.

LSG is located at 1330 West Peachtree St in the Arthritis Foundation building.  The event will take place in the 1st floor conference room.  Free parking is available or you can take MARTA to the Arts Center station and walk one block north on West Peachtree.

Cross of Grace
Cross of Grace
Cross of Grace Lutheran Church, Jonesborough, TN, new mission of the ELCA has been lead by mission developer Pastor Ed Wolff since January 1, 2009.  A retired pastor, Ed devotes 1/2 of his time to this ministry.

The mission start was encouraged by the "old Holston Heritage" Conference, which represented 11 congregations in Northeast Tennessee.  The mission began from scratch, with no potential members from other Lutheran congregations.  It's focus is on those who have been inactive worshippers, no matter what the denomination, and people who have not experienced being part of a community of faith.

During 2009, Pastor Wolff visited many leaders of the community to determine community needs.  In addition, in April, he and volunteers from other congregations began to make initial calls identifying those who might be prospects for this new mission.  Their efforts were met with positive response and Cross of Grace began at 9:30 am on January 3, 2010.

Please pray for this new mission as it continues to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ in the Jonesborough area.

Pasch
Bill Pasch, parish musician at Emmanuel, Atlanta, has combined the African American spiritual tune, "Take Me to the Water" with the Martin Luther hymn "Baptized in Jordan" to produce a popular choral work for the Augsburg Choral Library. The new choral work is dedicated to "Pastors Martin Luther and Martin Luther King, Jr." In addition, Bill has donated his royalties for the piece to the Southeastern Synod. (Thanks, Bill!)
