Interim Director Appointed to Atlanta Center
Rev. Dr. Wallace Interim Director Appointed to Atlanta Center
COLUMBIA, SC - Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (LTSS) named the Rev. Dr. Beverly R. Wallace as the interim director of the Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta (LTCA) beginning September 15, 2009.

"We believe that Dr. Wallace brings the gifts that the Lutheran Center in Atlanta needs during this time of transition and new beginnings.  We are committed to continuing the faithful work of the past and seeking new ways to be present on the campus of the Interdenominational Theological Center.  We seek to serve the Lutheran community in Atlanta, ELCA seminarians wishing to spend some time at the Interdenominational Theological Center, and others who will want to take advantage of this wonderful theological resource," said the Rev. Dr. Marcus J. Miller, president of the seminary.

As the interim director, Wallace will lead the center, which is administered and governed by the seminary, in its mission to collaborate in the preparation of leaders for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

"This seven-month assignment will allow me to assist in hopefully revitalizing and the re-invigoration of this very important, and perhaps under-utilized resource, located right here in Atlanta, by re-capturing the initial purpose of the center, that of being a place for theological education for those who are interested in urban and multicultural ministry," said Wallace. "I believe the center is critical to the work of mission that we claim as our calling and our inheritance as people of God."

Wallace, a graduate of the LTSS, currently serves as Assistant to the Bishop in the Southeastern Synod of the ELCA, where she provides care for congregations, coordinates the synod's candidacy process for rostered leadership, and serves as liaison for the synod's companion synod in Ethiopia. Additionally, she serves as the synod staff for the African Descent Strategy and the social ministry group, Alliance of Lutheran Ministries in the South.  She will continue her role in the synod with some adjustment to her responsibilities during this part-time, interim appointment.

"Pastor Wallace has a unique passion for raising up, training and supporting leaders for our church. She is especially concerned with encouraging leaders in and for our ethnic communities. I believe that she will bring that passion along with considerable skill to the job at LTCA," said Bishop H. Julian Gordy of the Southeastern Synod.

LTCA is located on the campus of the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, the largest African American seminary in the United States.  The center provides theological education opportunities, specifically in the contexts of evangelical outreach, congregational mission, and multicultural ministries, for those seeking to become rostered leaders in the ELCA, as well as for existing lay leaders and rostered leaders.

The previous director of LTCA, the Rev. Lawrence J. Clark, accepted a new call to serve as pastor at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chicago, IL on July 1, 2009.

LTSS, located in Columbia, South Carolina, is one of eight seminaries of the ELCA and is the only ELCA seminary in the southern United States.  It was founded in 1830 and offers four theological degrees to those from the ELCA and many other Christian denominations.
