50 Days of Prayer
Bishop Hanson ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson has asked members to pray and study Scripture -- focusing on this church and the 2009 Churchwide Assembly -- for the 50 days prior to the assembly. "50 Days of Prayer" begins June 28. Members are asked to pray daily, meet in groups each week and use the assembly's daily lectionary for reflection. Congregations are invited to use suggested petitions for prayers during Sunday worship. Find resources and instructions at www.elca.org/50days.
37,000 Lutherans Heading to the
ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans
Jesus Justice Jazz
Tens of thousands of teenagers will converge on New Orleans for the Youth Gathering of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), a triennial event for the high school-age members of the 4.7 million-member church, and to work alongside those who build, teach and live in the area still recovering nearly four years after Hurricane Katrina.
As many as 26,725 teenagers are registered to attend the gathering July 22-26. They will be accompanied by 8,593 adult leaders, including 37 bishops, and another 1,700 volunteers.
"Jesus Justice Jazz" is the gathering theme. Worship, Bible Study and Christian Community will bolster the participants as they work in about 150 community service projects across the area and engage the unique culture of the region.
Leadership Event (MYLE) will be held July 19-22 at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel. About 30 young Lutherans with disabilities and their adult companions will attend DAYLE. MYLE will attract about 900 youth. A convention of the Lutheran Youth Organization (LYO) will be held July 26-
29 in Hattiesburg, Miss.
The three full days of the gathering will include time in the New Orleans Morial Convention Center, an evening event at the Superdome, music and other evening activities in the hotels, and a "Final 15" to conclude each day with 15 minutes of small group devotions.
ELCA Global Mission's international companion program is bringing about 50 young Lutherans to the gathering from as many as 25 countries in Africa, Asia, Central America, Europe and South America.

AFFIRM 2009
We had a great week at AFFIRM 2009. 250 youth were led by 80 volunteer staff from across our four states. Affirm 2009 was held at the University of North Alabama June 14-19.  Affirm is a five-day youth event of faith, fellowship, worship and friends sponsored by  the ELCA Southeastern Synod. Grounded in Scripture, the event offers youth the opportunity to develop the ministry, life, and leadership skills that allow each individual to know and live out God's affirming touch in Jesus Christ.  Our theme was Come Follow Me which was lived out each day in morning devotions, worship services, devotions on the hall in the evenings and throughout the different units. Join us  June 20-25, 2010 at Affirm!

Preston Jutte, from St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Franklin, TN writes:
Affirm 2009
After being at Affirm twice already, I was worried about hanging out with the same people and not experiencing new things. I was wrong. I made new, close relationships with strangers, and it was great. I've come away from Affirm with a tight-knit "family" and an overall new closeness to God. I don't know that I'd be the person I am today without Affirm. It's really a life-changing experience.
