Southeastern Synod Delegation Visits Guatemala
|
|
A delegation
of nine people from the Southeastern Synod visited Guatemala May 8-16,
2009. Led by Pastor Scott Peterson from
Madison, AL, this group was comprised of five people from AL, two from TN, and
two from GA. They were: Pastor Scott Peterson, Lois Graff, Jackie
Fry, Dan and Chase Scroggins, Pastor Ann Bassett, Patti Wilder, Carla Stickles,
and Pastor Nancy Christensen.
They were
hosted by Padre Horacio Castillo and family, leaders of Iglesia Luterana Agustina de Guatemala, also called ILAG, who are our Lutheran global
partners in Guatemala. Synod salary
support is provided to Pastora Amanda Olson de Castillo, a graduate of Luther
Seminary, who serves the 17 congregations and 2 schools that comprise ILAG, along with the rest of the
Castillo family and the pastors, evangelists, and catechists who live in the ILAG communities throughout the country.
The trip
consisted of three primary activities: a
visit to the rural village of Israel, and the congregation of Iglesia Luterana
Agustina Jesus de los Milagros; a women's retreat at the Lutheran Center; and a
visit to a school in Guatemala City. In
addition, the delegation spent a day in Antigua Guatemala, and enjoyed good
food, and abundant hospitality throughout the 9-day visit.
