500 Homes Canvassed in One Week
|
|
At
the 2009 Southeastern Synod Assembly in honor of our past Director of
Evangelical Outreach, Pastor Gary Christensen, a challenge was issued
to all mission and redeveloping congregations. The first congregation to canvass 500 homes would be given $1000. Peace Lutheran Church in Spring Hill, TN canvassed 500 homes in a week. How does a redeveloping congregation canvass 500 homes in a week? Everybody does a little so no one has to do a lot! "It is the responsibility of ALL disciples to go and tell the good news," said Pastor Ann Bassett. "It also
helps to have a specific event about which to tell our neighbors and friends." At Peace Lutheran Church in Spring Hill it was the Craft/Garage Sale and VBS.
During worship on Sunday, twenty families took 10 flyers to give to their neighbors during the week. On Wednesday evening 6 people gathered to visit 20 homes each. On Thursday evening 8 members gathered to visit 25 homes each. "Each evening we went canvassing, it only took about an hour," said Len Smith, member of Peace Lutheran Church. "Afterwards we would celebrate by either getting ice cream or supper together." Juli Koehler adds, "I love our church, so it's only natural to want to invite others to be a part of our community of faith!"
With
the GM plant of Spring Hill (formally know as Saturn) idle until at
least November, resources are strained. The $1000 grant will be used
to hep Peace Lutheran Church be a joyful, visible participant in Community events such as the 4th of July parade, the Spring Hill Business Expo and the Country Ham Festival. It will also be used as seed money to begin a wheelchair ramp ministry.

Rev. Dr. Wallace interviewed for Essence Magazine
|
|
The Rev. Dr. Beverly Wallace, Assistant to the Bishop, is quoted in the June issue of Essence Magazine, an African American
Women's publication. The article is entitled, "This Far By Faith".
Grammy Award Singer Jennifer Hudson was in the spotlight last year when
her mother, brother and nephew were murdered. When interviewed,
Jennifer Hudson refused to talk about her loss experience. The writer of
the article called Dr. Wallace as one who has written about grief and loss in
the book she co-authored "African American Grief" (Bronner-Routlege
Press, 2005) to find out if this was normative. As quoted in the
article, Wallace said, "It does not surprise me that she is not talking about
this in public. Sometimes acknowledging something makes it real. While
there is healing in the acknowledgment, it also takes one deep into the
sorrow and pain. Her loss is so recent and traumatic, she simply may not
be ready to go there." It was noted too that Jennifer Hudson's faith,
even in the darkest days, never wavered.
